About the Company
CHIRP Robotics is a well-funded early-stage startup based in Torrance, California operating in stealth mode. The company focuses on developing modular intelligence and autonomous hardware systems applicable to a variety of vehicles and domains. Their portfolio includes numerous patented hardware technologies alongside software and algorithmic intellectual property. The leadership includes a CEO with SpaceX founding experience, bringing deep technical knowledge, industry connections, and business acumen.
Role Overview
We seek mechanically inclined engineers eager to take on significant responsibility early in their careers by prototyping and developing robotic hardware. You will engage in mechanical design using CAD, assemble and modify electro-mechanical systems, conduct rigorous testing, troubleshoot failures encountered during real-world implementation, and iterate rapidly to improve designs. The position prioritizes practical build experience, problem-solving skills, fast learning aptitude, and collaborative mindset over formal degrees.
Responsibilities
- Create mechanical component and assembly designs, fixtures, and prototypes using CAD software.
- Construct and assemble robotic and electromechanical hardware systems.
- Transform loosely defined challenges into effective, functional physical solutions.
- Test prototypes rigorously to identify root causes of failures.
- Iterate design improvements focusing on reliability, manufacturability, assembly efficiency, and ease of servicing.
- Help develop processes, tools, and organizational standards for hardware development.
- Manage complete projects end-to-end rather than isolated tasks.
Required and Desired Qualifications
- Proven hands-on experience building mechanical or robotic systems.
- Practical mechanical design knowledge and CAD proficiency.
- Strong mechanical intuition complemented by problem-solving capabilities.
- Ability to rapidly understand and work with new systems independently.
- High sense of ownership, accountability, and persistence in project follow-through.
- Intellectual honesty with clear communication of challenges and setbacks.
- Modesty and eagerness to learn from peers across disciplines.
- Effective, straightforward communication skills.
- Passion for working on challenging physical systems within a close-knit team environment.
Additional Experience Valued
- Involvement with FIRST Robotics Competition or other serious robotics programs.
- Personal mechanical, automotive, aerospace, or robotics projects.
- Skills in CNC machining, fabrication, welding, or 3D printing.
- Design experience with mechanisms, drivetrains, structural components, enclosures, or fixtures.
- Experience in prototype testing, failure diagnostics, and iterative design.
- Working within systems involving mechanical, electrical, and software integration.
- Background in fast-paced labs, startups, or competition teams.
Terms & Eligibility
- Employment type: Full-time, on-site in Torrance, California.
- Applicants must be U.S. citizens or have green card status.
- Salary range between $90,000 and $120,000 annually plus stock options and benefits.
