About TERRAIN

TERRAIN is a pioneering initiative based in Ngár-go/Fitzroy, Australia, focused on cultivating playful, engaging physical and digital environments that reconnect people to the broader more-than-human world. As a first-of-its-kind social enterprise, TERRAIN operates an award-winning ecologically focused bookshop, gallery, and studio dedicated to exploring and manifesting Environmental Intelligence (EI) as the successor cultural epoch to the Anthropocene.

The organisation is committed to fostering symbiotic relationships among humans, plants, animals, machines, and microorganisms, aimed at inspiring a planetary ecosystem mindset. TERRAIN’s community hub provides a space for research, development, and experimentation with new environmental ideas, systems, and experiences, including the ecological restoration platform Bioassembly.

Role Overview

As Programs Coordinator, reporting directly to TERRAIN’s Founder, you will oversee the entire lifecycle of public programming, educational offerings, partnerships, and events, with a special focus on Bioassembly. Your duties include strategic planning, partnership development, event logistics, facilitation, communication, documentation, and program evaluation. This dynamic role requires agility across strategic thought, operational execution, administration, and problem-solving.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Plan, produce, and execute TERRAIN's public programs, member events, and Bioassembly activities.
  • Manage projects comprehensively from concept through to delivery, handling timelines, budgets, and logistics.
  • Coordinate volunteers, facilitators, guest speakers, and collaborative partners.
  • Build and nurture relationships with community groups, educational bodies, sponsors, and strategic partners.
  • Create and manage written communications including newsletters, website content, and digital media.
  • Assist in sourcing funding by contributing to grant proposals, sponsorship solicitations, and partnership strategies.
  • Drive revenue growth via corporate, educational, and public programming offerings.
  • Conduct program evaluations and support organizational reporting and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Manage operational logistics related to equipment, deliveries, and site travel.

Required Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience in coordinating and delivering community programs, events, or projects from initiation to completion.
  • Strong skills in project management, budgeting, and organizational coordination.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication capabilities.
  • Ability to independently prioritise workloads while collaborating effectively with diverse stakeholders.
  • Possession of a current unrestricted Victorian driver’s licence.
  • Willingness to occasionally work on weekends to support program delivery.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience in grant writing or fundraising.
  • Proven ability to develop partnerships and manage stakeholders.
  • Background in environmental, cultural, or social impact sectors.
  • Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite, particularly InDesign.
  • Comfort with digital tools and workflows including project management software such as Asana.
  • Knowledge or experience in environmental humanities, sciences, design, or related technologies.
  • Relevant tertiary qualification in environmental studies, humanities, geography, design, communications, social sciences, or comparable disciplines.
  • Strong design and curatorial sense for creating cohesive brand experiences.
  • Access to a vehicle for transportation needs.

Additional Information

TERRAIN is a start-up environment that values curiosity, independence, relationship-building skills, and accountability. The organisation encourages applicants whose values align with their environmental mission, even if their qualifications do not perfectly match all listed criteria. This position is part-time on a 6-month contract basis with potential for extension. Work location is onsite at TERRAIN’s premises with hybrid flexibility. Weekend work may be needed. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience. Applicants must have the right to work in Australia and be 18+ years old.
