Job description
Role Overview
We are seeking a Prisoner Custody Officer (PCO) to join our Prisoner Escort Custody Services team. This role is crucial to maintaining safety and security within the justice system. The position offers stable employment with a starting salary of £24,596 for a 35-hour workweek, increasing to £25,555 by September 1, 2026, with additional annual pay progression up to £27,180 by year four. Shift work involves early and late schedules across six days a week, requiring flexibility as finishing times may vary and overtime could be necessary. Shift rotas are planned 12 weeks ahead, and part-time roles are possible but only for full days.
Key Duties
- Escorting detainees safely within the court environment to various locations like courtrooms and holding cells.
- Monitoring detainee welfare during court appearances and escorting until they are either released or returned to custody.
- Maintaining high security standards by managing sensitive situations confidentially and monitoring behavior to mitigate risks.
- Conducting thorough searches to ensure safety.
- Accurately documenting all necessary records.
- Collaborating closely with court personnel and other partners to facilitate smooth operations.
- Providing detainees access to food, drinks, and wellbeing checks to ensure humane treatment.
Candidate Requirements
- A diverse range of applicants is welcome; key qualities include reliability, integrity, and compassion.
- Full paid training is provided over five and a half weeks along with ongoing mentorship.
- A valid UK driving license (category B/B1) is preferred but not mandatory.
- Applicants need sufficient physical fitness to meet the job's demands.

- Competence in managing challenging behavior and diffusing conflicts.
