Role overview
Royal Mail is hiring a Postie (Postal Delivery Driver) in Downham Market. This permanent position places you at the centre of the local community, delivering letters and parcels while representing a trusted national service. The role combines driving, walking, customer contact, and outdoor work, with a steady routine and plenty of variety.
Location and contract
You will be based at Downham Market Delivery Office, PE38 9AA. The job is offered on a permanent contract.
Pay and hours
The pay rate is £13.68 per hour, with wages paid monthly and paid overtime available. Working time is 37 hours per week, arranged across 5 days out of 7, Monday to Sunday, typically between 08:00 and 15:45. You will work on a rotating shift pattern, including some weekends, and your rota will set your routes and hours based on demand. Sunday work is required at Kings Lynn Delivery Office.
What the job involves
- Sort letters and parcels at the delivery office before heading out on route.
- Deliver mail by van and on foot within your local area.

- Carry out duties outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Handle busy, time-sensitive workloads and adapt to changing delivery demands.
Role expectations
This is a physically active and fast-moving job. You should expect long walking distances of up to 12 miles, or more than 20,000 steps in a day, alongside daily driving of a Royal Mail van. The work can be demanding, especially in peak periods, and includes delivery of high parcel volumes, letters, and other important items such as exam results, birthday cards, business orders, election materials, food products, and alcohol, all in line with Royal Mail business standards.
About you
- You must hold a full manual UK driving licence with no more than 6 penalty points.
- Your licence must be registered in your current name and address.
- You should be willing and able to drive a Royal Mail van every day and pass a driving assessment.
- You need to be physically fit enough for long walks, stairs, hills, and lifting or carrying mailbags of 10 kg or more.
- You should be dependable, self-driven, and organised.
- You need resilience and the ability to stay effective in a busy environment.
- You must be customer-focused and committed to delivering excellent service.
- You should be comfortable working outdoors and independently.

Full training, a uniform, and an iconic red van will be provided.
