Role Overview

This opportunity is based at the University of Sussex in Brighton, with working hours from 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM. Facilities Porters at Sussex Estates and Facilities play an essential role in maintaining a safe, clean, and welcoming campus environment. Acting as the primary point of contact for students, staff, and visitors, Porters provide friendly assistance and perform vital duties including cleaning, minor maintenance, and safety inspections. A strong focus on professionalism, customer service, and high standards is fundamental to this role.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Serve as the initial contact point for residents and visitors, offering information, addressing inquiries, and resolving concerns.
  • Carry out regular safety inspections, manage emergency responses such as fire, medical or security situations, and support evacuation procedures.
  • Handle incoming mail and packages by receiving, tracking, and distributing them promptly while notifying recipients.
  • Identify and report maintenance problems, collaborating with contractors or relevant staff to ensure timely fixes.
  • Develop positive relationships with residents, professionally address issues, and uphold the University’s policies and conduct standards.

Candidate Requirements

  • Right to work in the UK and willingness to undergo a DBS check.
  • Possession of a valid UK driving license.
  • Effective communication skills to build rapport with residents and visitors.
  • Dependable, punctual, and able to maintain a professional and friendly front.
  • Proficiency in basic administrative functions such as record maintenance, directory management, and managing check-in/check-out processes.
  • Ability to remain calm and respond appropriately during emergencies or unexpected events.
  • Cooperative across departments with meticulous attention to task accuracy.
