Role Overview

The Desk Sergeant serves as the frontline point of contact for public complaints, inquiries, and notifications according to established emergency protocols. This position requires interpreting and enforcing federal, local, and international laws, especially focusing on host nation regulations, while offering leadership and guidance to subordinate personnel.

Key Duties

• Act as the initial responder for complaints and emergency situations, ensuring accurate and timely handling of calls and notifications.
• Provide law enforcement guidance in compliance with current federal and local regulations, including adherence to host nation laws.
• Serve as the primary contact during police and fire emergencies, coordinating closely with supervisory officers.
• Conduct comprehensive training sessions for new personnel, including cross-training in police, fire, and emergency medical service operations.
• Ensure smooth transition between shifts by conducting thorough guard mount briefings on ongoing law enforcement activities.
• Manage and maintain security systems such as the Intrusion Detection System within the Emergency Communications Center during assigned shifts.
• Exhibit proficiency in a range of law enforcement functions including report writing, securing crime scenes, force protection, community engagement, and crime deterrence.
• Receive, assess, and act upon all incoming calls and complaints, with special attention to emergencies.

Employment Conditions

• Appointment is conditional upon a successful background investigation to determine suitability and fitness.
• Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must complete Selective Service Registration certification.
• Proof of U.S. citizenship is mandatory.
• Compliance with the Exceptional Family Member Program as per DoD instructions is required.
• Must meet criteria related to DoD Civilian Personnel Management System employment regulations for foreign areas.
• Direct deposit for salary payments is compulsory.
• U.S. citizens residing overseas are generally ineligible under the Status of Forces Agreement.
• Physical fitness requirements include passing a 1.5-mile run within 17:30 minutes and completing 19 push-ups in 2 minutes annually.
• Medical clearance and periodic health evaluations are required, including vision, hearing, dexterity, and immunizations relevant to overseas duty.
• Completion of the Civilian Police Academy within one year of employment is mandatory.
• Participation in the Individual Reliability Program and scheduled shift rotations are obligatory.
• Compliance with drug testing, uniform standards, and ability to wear chemical protective gear as specified by relevant Army regulations.
• Must possess a valid U.S. driver’s license and be able to acquire the USAREUR/TMP driving certification.
• Required to complete use of force, jurisdictional training, and certifications on radar and alcohol detection devices.
• Must adhere to gun control laws including the Lautenberg Amendment; pass weapons qualification quarterly, and complete CPR and first aid recertifications annually.
• Work schedule requires availability for shifts, overtime, weekends, holidays, and emergency call back situations.

Qualifications

Open to U.S. citizens only. Candidates must provide documented proof of relevant experience equivalent to one year of specialized work involving evidence collection and preservation, criminal investigations, emergency dispatching, and report generation needed for judicial proceedings. Education cannot substitute for required experience.
