Operating Room Attendant

About the Role

Under the guidance of the Perioperative Unit Manager, the Operating Room Attendant plays a vital role in aiding surgical nursing staff by carrying out various support tasks including stocking supplies, cleaning, portering patients, and ensuring the maintenance of a safe and orderly environment in the Operating Room at Misericordia Community Hospital. The Operating Room is a demanding environment featuring 10 theaters where the Attendant must skillfully maneuver patient stretchers and related equipment.

Physical demands include bending, stooping, reaching overhead, and assisting with the lifting and transferring of patients. Exposure to chemicals and bodily fluids during cleaning operations is part of the job. This position is governed by the CUPE 2111 Collective Agreement.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

• Manage the stocking and replenishment of equipment and supplies within the Operating Room.
• Perform cleaning duties to maintain a sterile and safe environment.
• Transport patients and equipment throughout the surgical suite efficiently and safely.
• Support nursing and surgical teams as needed during various procedures and room turnovers.

Required Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 10 education is mandatory.
• Certification in Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) is essential.
• Previous direct patient care experience in a healthcare setting is required.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work both independently and collaboratively are crucial.
• Capability to stand and walk throughout entire work shifts.
• Ability to maintain positive interpersonal relationships with patients and healthcare staff.

Preferred Qualifications

• Recent experience as an Operating Room Service Attendant.
• Previous patient portering experience.
• At least two years of experience in an acute care hospital environment.
• High School diploma or an equivalent credential.
• Knowledge of infection control and aseptic techniques is advantageous.

• Temporary full-time employment from 10 August 2026 to 31 January 2027.
• Full-time equivalent: 1.0.
• Shifts are 7.75 hours long with 12 weeks in cycle, including day, evening, and weekend shifts, with days off as per rotation.
• Shift cycle consists of 60 shifts.
• Minimum hourly wage is $21.23, maximum hourly wage is $23.74.
• No vehicle requirement for this role.
