Role Overview
This is a hands-on, field-based opening with a growing environmental services company that works outdoors throughout the year. The role is based in the Greater Chicago area and is suited to someone interested in habitat restoration and ecological field work. It is an entry-level opportunity with potential for longer-term growth.
The position focuses on restoration ecology work such as invasive species management, prescribed burns, native seeding, and native plant installation. The work location is West Chicago, IL 60185.
Compensation for this full-time role is $18 to $19.50 per hour.
Requirements
- Applicants should be at least 21 years old, except for seasonal hires.
- A valid state driver’s license is required, and the driving record must satisfy the employer’s insurance standards.
- A high school diploma is required, along with active pursuit of a college degree in Ecology or a similar field. An associate degree or bachelor’s degree is preferred.
- The selected candidate must earn an Illinois Department of Agriculture Commercial Pesticide Operators License within 30 days of joining; study materials and exam fees will be covered by the employer.
- The job demands the physical capacity to perform mechanical and chemical invasive plant control, native seeding, planting, and controlled burning, including long periods of standing, kneeling, bending, and walking on uneven ground in all weather and seasons.
- The role requires the ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
- Basic smartphone and computer literacy is needed.
- A working understanding of Midwest ecological restoration methods and plant communities is expected.
- Candidates should be collaborative and align with the company’s values of quality focus, ownership, and growth orientation.
Responsibilities
- Manage invasive vegetation through herbicide use or mechanical removal.
- Serve as a crew member on controlled burns.
- Help restore native habitat areas through seeding and planting native species.
- Draft basic service reports that summarize daily work.
- Carry out tasks safely and follow company safety procedures.
- Do routine upkeep on small-engine equipment and hand tools.
- Work under direction from teammates and crew leaders.
- Drive company vehicles to and from work locations, including towing a trailer when needed.
- Operate specialized machines such as UTVs, Marsh Masters, skid steers, and brush mowers.
- Track work hours accurately and submit timesheets for manager approval.
- Follow the policies outlined in the employee handbook.
