Role Overview
This remote position based in London, Ontario, involves working alongside The London Free Press newsroom. The ideal candidate will be a proactive self-starter and collaborative team member, adept at promptly adapting and delivering high-quality multimedia journalism for diverse platforms. The work demands swift and accurate coverage, appealing to London's heterogeneous audience.
Key Responsibilities
- Produce and write stories while capturing photos suitable for print, web, and mobile mediums, customizing content to platform-specific requirements.
- Develop daily local story ideas and remain adaptable to shift priorities based on newsroom demands.
- Leverage social media and digital tools to track breaking news and trending topics of interest to London residents.
- Submit video clips for digital audiences and collaborate with digital teams to create interactive and multimedia content that enriches reader engagement.
- Establish and nurture sources to break news and influence the editorial agenda.
Compensation and Terms
Salary offers are based on qualifications, experience, job responsibilities, and candidate location. This role is unionized, governed by collective agreement terms, with the posted starting salary aligned with the Year 1 rate in the agreement.
Candidate Qualifications
- Graduation from a journalism program or related discipline; newsroom experience is advantageous.
- Ability to effectively write breaking news, feature stories, short format pieces, and unconventional formats such as explainers and Q&A.
- Keen eagerness to contribute within a daily newsroom alongside veteran journalists.
- Curious mindset with a drive to explore deeper story layers and a developing aptitude for explanatory journalism.
- Skilled in reporting not only events but also the underlying reasons and implications, expressing insights clearly to readers.
- Experience and competence in video or podcast presenting are a plus.
- Possession of a valid driver’s license and access to a personal vehicle is considered an asset.
