Role Overview
This permanent full-time role is based in Whanganui and involves leading a team of experts across education, curriculum, and learning support. The primary focus is to provide an integrated, highly responsive local support function for schools, kura, kōhanga reo, early learning providers, ākonga, whānau, and educators. The role involves developing and implementing strategies aligned with the Ministry of Education's priorities to ensure cohesive service delivery.
Key Duties
- Provide accessible, timely support services to educators.
- Integrate Te Tiriti o Waitangi principles into all activities and reporting.
- Support the learning support delivery model, including learning action plans.
- Assist learning and education support specialists in their roles.
- Collaborate with regional and national colleagues to share information and drive service improvements.
- Strengthen connections with Te Mahau as the primary relationship holder, working alongside Leadership Advisors and Strategic Advisor Māori.
Qualifications and Experience
- A relevant tertiary qualification with experience in education or government sectors is essential.
- Background in learning support, Māori education, Pacific education, or other education specializations is advantageous.
- Knowledge of or willingness to understand Te Ao Māori, tikanga, and Te Reo Māori.
- Understanding or willingness to learn about the Treaty of Waitangi's application in the public sector.
- Previous operational leadership experience in complex environments, including risk management.
- Capacity to lead through organizational change and work confidently amidst uncertainty.
- Competency in providing advice and cultivating trust with varied audiences.
- Ability to analyze and act upon data and insights.
- Commitment to upholding the Public Service Standards of Integrity and Conduct.
About the Team
Te Mahau | Education Services offers leadership and integrated support to schools and early learning services. The team handles learning support, education advice, regulatory functions, and curriculum support while collaborating across regions and nationally to enhance guidance, design, and policy through shared practices and insights.
There is a strong focus on working with diverse communities supporting Māori, Pacific peoples, disabled ākonga, those requiring learning support, and learners from disadvantaged backgrounds.
Salary and Benefits
The annual salary ranges from $142,856 to $214,284 plus 3% KiwiSaver contributions. Salary placement depends on the candidate's skills and experience.
