About the Role and Organization
The New York Islanders Hockey Club, a historic and celebrated franchise with a passionate fan base, seeks a Community Relations Intern to join their vibrant team. The organization, known for its 1980s Dynasty including four consecutive Stanley Cup wins and nearly two decades of playoff successes, continues to leave an impact on the sports and entertainment world. Operating from the state-of-the-art UBS Arena, nestled within the landmark Belmont Park area, the team offers a dynamic environment driving both hockey and community engagement.
Job Overview and Responsibilities
This internship is a unique fan-facing role aimed at nurturing community connections and growing hockey's local presence through grassroots initiatives. The intern will help set up, manage, and dismantle activities at Islanders events held both onsite and at community locations. Responsibilities include supporting grassroots programs exposing local youth to hockey, assisting with fundraising efforts for the Islanders Children’s Foundation, and supporting the Community Relations team with daily operational tasks.
- Support the planning and execution of Islanders community events, including tours, school programs, street hockey initiatives, and home games.
- Handle operational needs for the Community Events Tour including preparing vehicles, setting up interactive games, and distributing promotional materials.
- Engage with fans, collect and securely manage data at events.
- Assist in organizing and soliciting donations for flagship fundraising events like the Islanders Golf Outing.
- Participate in game-day community awareness and fundraising activities such as raffles during home games.
- Host and document street hockey and floorball programs aimed at growing the sport.
- Handle clerical duties such as mail sorting, data entry, donation processing, and departmental organization.
Qualifications and Desired Skills
- Highly organized with strong interpersonal communication capabilities.
- Exceptional attention to detail in all work performed.
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications including PowerPoint, Word, and Excel.
- Strong ability to multitask, manage time effectively, and collaborate within a busy, fast-paced setting.
- Adaptability to shift priorities quickly and work independently with motivation and accountability.
- Creative thinking and problem-solving aptitude, with ability to handle conflict effectively.
- Willingness to work varied hours, including evenings, weekends, and holidays as dictated by event schedules.
Work Locations and Schedule
- Positions operate across multiple locations: Northwell Health Ice Center in East Meadow, the Islanders Executive Offices in Floral Park, UBS Arena in Elmont, and various community locations aligned with event schedules.
- Work primarily revolves around the team’s game schedule and special community events, requiring flexibility and availability for diverse timings.
