Overview
Reporting to the Chief Engineer, this role involves maintaining the aesthetic and functional quality of the hotel premises including guest rooms, public and staff areas. Responsibilities encompass repairs in paint, woodwork, plumbing, heating systems, furniture, fixtures, and basic electrical maintenance to uphold the standards of Westin Cape Town.
Candidate Profile
- Minimum 4-5 years of relevant work experience in a similar handyman or maintenance role.
- Availability to work in shifts, including weekends and after-hours as operationally required.
- Professional demeanor with good communication skills and proficiency in English (spoken, read, written).
- Capable of working independently and collaboratively within a team.
- Physical ability to carry out demanding maintenance tasks.
- Maintains a clean, professional appearance and hygiene at all times.
- Strong attention to detail related to assigned duties.
Key Responsibilities
- Complete daily maintenance tasks as outlined by departmental requirements.
- Operate and maintain building management systems (BMS) to control utilities efficiently.
- Maintain heating, air conditioning, electrical, mechanical, and plumbing equipment.
- Handle tools and equipment responsibly, ensuring proper storage and control to minimize misuse or damage.
- Implement and participate in preventative maintenance programs to meet hotel standards.
- Undertake basic repairs across various categories including HVAC, electrical, plumbing, carpentry, painting, and general building maintenance.
- Respond promptly to guest repair requests, ensuring excellent customer service.
- Practice safety procedures rigorously, including the use of PPE, lockout/tagout protocols, and safe handling of hazardous materials.
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of maintenance areas and equipment.
- Monitor energy and utility consumption; propose conservation opportunities.
- Keep accurate records of maintenance activities, inspections, inventory, and communicate shift activities effectively.
- Engage positively with guests, addressing their inquiries and complaints courteously and efficiently.
- Use computers for logging records, managing schedules, and data entry related to maintenance operations.
