About the Role

We are seeking a skilled Fire System Designer/Estimator to join our Christchurch fire protection team. This position involves designing compliant fire protection systems and generating precise cost estimates for commercial and industrial projects throughout New Zealand. The role requires collaboration with consultants, contractors, and regulatory bodies to ensure all fire protection designs conform to national standards and provide safe, efficient, and economical solutions.

Key Responsibilities

• Develop detailed fire system designs including sprinkler, alarm and evacuation, and special hazard systems such as gas suppression, foam, and water mist.
• Create CAD and Revit drawings alongside hydraulic calculations, block plans, and system schematics.
• Ensure compliance with the New Zealand Building Code, relevant NZ Standards (NZS 4512, NZS 4541, NZS 4515, NZS 4510), Acceptable Solutions (C/AS1–C/AS7), and applicable fire engineering reports.
• Coordinate with Fire and Emergency New Zealand, building consent authorities, and qualified inspectors.
• Conduct site inspections to validate design assumptions and installation conditions.
• Estimate project costs accurately considering materials, labor, subcontractors, and equipment.
• Analyze tender documents, architectural drawings, and specifications to define project scope.
• Prepare detailed bills of quantity, pricing schedules, and tender submissions while identifying opportunities for value engineering and cost savings.
• Support sales and project teams during tender assessment and negotiation phases.
• Offer technical advice and support to project managers, installers, and subcontractors throughout project lifecycles, assisting with design modifications, RFIs, and compliance documentation as needed.
• Contribute to commissioning and handover activities when required.

Required Skills & Qualifications

• Proficiency with design software such as AutoCAD and Revit or comparable platforms.
• Thorough understanding of New Zealand fire protection codes, standards, and compliance procedures.
• Capability to execute hydraulic calculations using specialized industry tools.
• Skill in interpreting architectural, mechanical, structural, and electrical engineering drawings.
• Relevant qualifications in engineering, drafting, or fire protection fields.
• Experience within New Zealand’s construction or fire protection sector is essential.
• Attention to detail with high accuracy standards.
• Excellent communication and ability to engage with multiple stakeholders.
• Capacity to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines in dynamic settings.
• Analytical approach to problem-solving prioritizing compliance and safety.
