Job description

Role Overview

The Estimator is tasked with assisting the Pre Construction Manager by preparing cost estimates for civil engineering and building projects related to Electricity Transmission Substations and High Voltage Direct Current Interconnector Converter stations. This role involves adhering to established bidding and estimating systems and processes. Collaboration mainly with the Pre Construction Manager is crucial, while coordination with tendering and engineering teams occurs as needed to develop solutions that fulfill both client and company goals, supporting the overall tender effort.

Primary Duties

  • Generate take-offs and bills of quantities following the Civil Engineering Standard Method of Measurement 4 (CESSM4) for civil enabling works, civil, structural, and architectural components.
  • Develop elemental cost plans to aid business development and budget proposals.
  • Utilize estimating software proficiently alongside advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Conduct estimates consistent with company procedures for Civil Engineering, Building, and Building Services work scopes.
  • Identify and log opportunities and risks during tendering.
  • Maintain a register documenting all assumptions reflected in the estimates.
  • Produce detailed exclusions, assumptions, and qualifications for tenders.

Handover Responsibilities

  • Prepare comprehensive estimating handover documentation.
  • Document notes from handover meetings.
  • Provide continuous support to the Pre Construction Manager concerning estimates and key assumptions.

Experience & Qualifications

  • Demonstrated experience within the construction sector, particularly in estimating roles.
  • Comprehensive working knowledge of CESMM4 is essential.
  • Strong communication skills and a proactive approach.
  • Experience within bid teams or commercial environments.
  • Previous involvement as part of project delivery teams.
  • Educational background includes BSc/BEng in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, Architectural Technology, or equivalent experience with HNC/HND in Building/Civil Engineering/Construction disciplines.
  • Solid understanding of civil/building design and construction methods.
  • Strong commercial and contractual acumen.
  • Familiarity with CDM Regulations 2015 and environmental considerations.
  • Professional memberships such as CEng/IEng (Institution of Civil Engineers), MCIOB/ICIOB (Chartered Institute of Building), or MRICS/AssocRICS in Construction Pathways.

Desirable Attributes

  • Experience within infrastructure projects, notably power sector substations, power generation, or water industry.
  • Knowledge of building services.

Compliance and Safety

  • Completion of relevant project-specific training (e.g., NG Persons training).
  • Experience and knowledge of CDM responsibilities.
  • IOSH Managing Safely certification for site safety.
  • Willingness and ability to travel as required under company driver and travel policies.
  • Driver awareness training compliance.
