Position Overview
The City of Andalusia invites applications for the role of Communications Officer based in Andalusia, Alabama. This vital position involves managing emergency and non-emergency calls related to crimes, fires, and medical incidents. The officer must evaluate situations, initiate appropriate responses by coordinating Police and Fire services, and maintain constant communication with mobile units via radio and computer systems. The role demands sound independent judgment, the ability to remain composed in high-stress life-threatening scenarios, and proficient equipment operation.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive and assess incoming public calls concerning emergencies and other requests.
- Determine appropriate actions and dispatch Police or Fire units as needed.
- Enter data into computer systems promptly while maintaining continuous radio contact with field units.
- Handle calls ranging from routine reports to urgent requests for assistance from citizens and public safety personnel.
- Operate emergency communication equipment efficiently and respond as required.
Qualifications and Requirements
- High school diploma from an accredited institution, ideally supplemented by typing courses.
- Valid Alabama driver's license issued by the Alabama Department of Public Safety.
- Certified or eligible to obtain National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification.
- Certification or eligibility for certification as a Communications Officer.
- Availability to work non-standard or alternate hours, including possible overtime.
- Maintain a valid telephone number.
- Successful completion of pre-employment testing as required by the appointing authority.
Compensation and Benefits
Annual starting salary will be commensurate with the applicant's experience. The position offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes Alabama State retirement, supplemental retirement plans, life and medical insurance, paid holidays, and vacation/sick leave.
