About FOR-SITE

Founded in 2003 by Chief Curator and Executive Director Cheryl Haines, FOR-SITE is focused on creating, understanding, and presenting art that explores the meaning of place. Through exhibitions, commissions, and public programming, FOR-SITE encourages innovative dialogue around natural and cultural environments.

Position Overview

The Communications and Programs Manager will work closely with the CCED to enhance FOR-SITE's media presence, outreach efforts, and public engagements. This role requires creativity and attention to detail, ideal for someone who thrives in a small, collaborative arts organization. The candidate should have experience making contemporary art compelling for media, partners, and diverse audiences.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with project-based PR agents as needed to develop and execute a communications strategy that raises FOR-SITE's public profile.
  • Create and distribute public-facing materials such as press kits, newsletters, and exhibition/event collateral with consistent and engaging messaging.
  • Manage daily press operations to secure and coordinate media coverage.
  • Maintain FOR-SITE's website, coordinating closely with the Graphic Designer on updates and production of digital and print assets.
  • Work alongside the Social Media Manager to generate content that broadens the reach of FOR-SITE's work.
  • Represent FOR-SITE professionally and warmly in all public and partner interactions.
  • Research and develop public programs supporting FOR-SITE's thematic projects including "And the Beat Goes On," identifying participants and community collaborators.
  • Build and maintain relationships with neighborhood organizations and cultural partners, serving as the main point of contact to coordinate involvement, scheduling, and communications.
  • Assist in planning and executing public events such as talks, performances, workshops, and community gatherings, managing logistics like scheduling, venues, and participant support.
  • Prepare program descriptions and promotional/educational materials for websites, newsletters, and event listings.

Working Conditions, Salary, and Benefits

This full-time role is based at FOR-SITE's office in the Fort Mason Center for Arts & Culture in San Francisco and requires presence in the office with occasional evening and weekend commitments. Salary is $75,000 annually, based on experience. Benefits include health and dental insurance, a 401(k) plan, and paid time off.

Qualifications

  • At least 3 years of proven communications experience within arts nonprofits, supported by strong work samples.
  • Familiarity with public programming, events, or community cultural initiatives is preferred.
  • Exceptionally organized with keen attention to detail and creative problem-solving skills.
  • Proficient in Mac OS, Microsoft Office Suite, Google Workspace, Dropbox, database systems, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Strong verbal, written, and listening communication abilities.
  • Able to work both independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Knowledge of the Bay Area arts scene—including artists, patrons, and institutions—is highly advantageous.
  • Educational qualifications in nonprofit administration, arts administration, museum studies, public art, or art history are preferred.
