About the Program
The Australian Government Career Starter Program is a year-long initiative designed to launch your career within government sectors. This full-time and permanent role offers a competitive salary along with paid leave and superannuation benefits. Participants gain practical experience working in various Australian Government departments and agencies while developing valuable professional skills supported by a structured program.
Key Benefits
- Permanent full-time APS1 position in a government department or agency
- Opportunity to pursue a Certificate IV — either in Government or Human Resource Management — concurrently with work

Eligibility Requirements
- Completion of Year 12 or an equivalent qualification within the last two years
- Australian citizenship
- Ability to pass security and police background checks
Work Streams and Roles
Applicants submit a single application and can be considered for two different streams depending on their interests and strengths.
Government Stream
- Engage in customer service, responding to public enquiries and supporting facility operations
- Assist in programs and policy management including training schedules, correspondence, and executive support
- Provide technical support related to IT infrastructure, procurement, and supplier communications
Participants in this stream complete a Certificate IV in Government, enhancing knowledge in public sector procedures, ethics, and legislation.
Human Resources Stream
- Support various HR functions including learning and development, wellness initiatives, and policy communication
- Handle inquiries and assist with HR policies and procedural compliance
- Assist in recruitment activities such as coordinating interviews and supporting governance committees
- Perform administrative duties like data entry, managing correspondence, and recordkeeping
This stream includes earning a Certificate IV in Human Resource Management which covers recruitment, performance management, and employee relations.
