Role Overview
The BI Developer plays a key role in maintaining, improving, migrating, and constructing BI reports, dashboards, semantic models, and analytical datasets across both current and future architectures.
Key Responsibilities
- Maintain and support current BI platforms including OBIEE, Cognos, Power BI, data cubes, and operational dashboards.
- Examine and interpret existing report logic including filters, KPIs, calculations, joins, and security protocols.
- Design and develop new reports and dashboards within the target BI environment.
- Migrate or rebuild legacy reports into modern BI platforms as part of the architectural transition.
- Create semantic models with calculated measures, KPIs, and reusable datasets to enhance reporting efficiency.
- Conduct validation of migrated reports by comparing them with existing versions to ensure data accuracy.
- Enhance dashboard operation by optimizing refresh schedules, query efficiency, and overall performance.
- Implement row-level security measures and define access controls aligned with business domain requirements.
- Collaborate closely with ETL Developers, Data Modelers, Data Architects, Technical Leads, Business Analysts, Platform Administrators, and other BI Developers to ensure seamless data flow and alignment.
- Assist in report decommissioning procedures following successful migration and validation processes.
- Support architecture transition activities by thoroughly understanding current-state logic prior to migration, simplification, or retirement.
Requirements
- Proven expertise using Power BI and/or enterprise BI solutions such as OBIEE, Cognos, Tableau, or Qlik.
- Strong proficiency in SQL query writing and optimization.
- Experience developing semantic models and working with DAX, MDX, measures, KPIs, and calculated fields.
- Good understanding of data modeling concepts such as star schemas, fact and dimension tables, aggregates, and reporting marts.
- Demonstrated skills in report migration, reconciliation, and performance tuning.
- Knowledgeable in BI platform security, including access control and row-level security implementation.
