Job description

Position Overview

The Assistant Security Manager plays a key role in supporting the management of physical security programs within an assigned museum security unit under the Office of Protection Services at the Smithsonian Institution. This position involves supervisory assistance through administrative staff and security supervisors.

Key Duties

  • Assist in the procurement, installation, inspection, and repair of security equipment and devices, both new and existing.
  • Support the Security Manager in guiding security and emergency preparedness activities across the designated Smithsonian buildings.
  • Create and evaluate materials such as briefings and point papers for presentation to the Security Manager.
  • Collect and analyze data to aid in planning and program development for short and long-range security initiatives and projects.

Qualifications and Experience

Applicants must pass a pre-employment background check, may undergo a probationary period, and must maintain a bank account suitable for direct deposit. Male applicants born after December 31, 1959, must be registered with Selective Service.

Promotion candidates must meet qualification requirements, including one year of time-in-grade at the next lower grade within 30 days of announcement closing. The required specialized experience differs by grade level:

  • GS-09: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-07, including assisting with security equipment acquisition and maintenance, performing organizational performance evaluations using reports and analyses, supporting security and emergency program development and implementation, and managing security projects.
  • GS-11: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-09, including managing security equipment acquisition, inspection and maintenance, evaluating organizational performance, leading security and emergency program development efforts, and overseeing security projects.

Alternatively, candidates may qualify with relevant graduate education, law degrees related to the position, or combinations of education and experience as specified.
