AI Engineer

Role Overview

As an AI Engineer within the Ministry of Defence of Singapore, you will spearhead data science and AI projects designed to improve decision-making across policy, operations, and resource management sectors. Working with the central AI team, you will engage cross-functionally with business and technical stakeholders to co-develop impactful AI applications, simultaneously fostering AI proficiency through knowledge sharing and promoting responsible AI practices.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead end-to-end data science and AI engineering initiatives including ideation, data processing, model creation, implementation, operational embedding, and presenting findings to stakeholders.
• Design, build, and deploy AI systems that convert insights into practical recommendations or automated actions for enhanced decision-making.
• Collaborate closely with business teams to identify potential AI applications, translate challenges into AI-driven solutions, and create proof-of-concept models to demonstrate value.
• Maintain strict standards throughout data preparation, modeling, version control, deployment, and ongoing monitoring, while exploring innovative techniques to enhance system performance.
• Document all technical activities, methodologies, model configurations, deployment details, and validation procedures comprehensively.
• Organize and contribute to knowledge-sharing events for AI and data science colleagues within MINDEF/SAF, tailoring technical content for audiences with varying expertise levels.

• Effectively communicating complex technical information to diverse audiences including experts and senior leaders with limited technical background.
• Staying current with rapid advancements in data science and AI methods and tools.
• Maintaining strong collaborative relationships with domain experts across multiple sectors to support broad AI and data science initiatives within the organization.

Candidate Profile

• Educational background in Statistics, Machine Learning, Computer Science, Operations Research, or similar disciplines.
• Preferred minimum of one year professional experience in roles related to data science, AI, or AI engineering; candidates without prior experience are also encouraged to apply.
• Experience with large language models (LLMs), agentic AI frameworks, and associated design patterns is a plus.
• Familiarity with model deployment and MLOps practices using commercial cloud services is advantageous.
• Proficient in at least one programming language such as Python, R, or SQL, along with AI and machine learning libraries/frameworks like PyTorch or TensorFlow.
• Demonstrates curiosity, creativity, and attention to detail in problem-solving.
• Capable of thriving in a dynamic, teamwork-oriented environment.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to convey complex concepts clearly to non-technical audiences.
