About the Role and Company
We are looking for a dedicated Afternoon Shift Machinist Apprentice to join Standard Machine, a Timken brand renowned for designing and producing high-quality parts for critical sectors such as pulp and paper, mining, oil and gas, chemical processing, steel mills, marine applications, transportation, military, and aerospace. This role operates Monday to Thursday from 3:00 pm onwards, offering a unique opportunity for those interested in gear cutting and milling to develop specialized skills within a supportive environment that encourages cross-training and personal growth through diverse career paths.
Key Responsibilities
- Interpret and analyze blueprints and engineered drawings accurately.
- Operate a range of machinery including boring mills and lathes as required.
- Understand and manage tool limitations and machine controls during operations.
- Execute machining tasks within strict tolerances with a solid grasp of feeds and speeds.
- Perform precise measurements using micrometers, calipers, and bore gauges, maintaining tight tolerances.
- Operate a travelling overhead crane with capacity up to 20 tonnes and understand rigging protocols.
- Inspect workpieces according to ISO and Quality Assurance standards.
- Work independently on assigned machines.
- Troubleshoot machinery and processes within the assigned area.
- Conduct basic preventative equipment maintenance.
- Ensure adherence to safety standards and procedures.
- Maintain a clean and safe work environment following set guidelines.
- Support continuous improvement projects under team leader guidance.
- Complete autonomous maintenance tasks as per daily checklists.
Qualifications and Competencies
- Journeyman Machinist certificate is beneficial but not mandatory.
- Must be a 3rd or 4th-year Apprentice; equivalent experience and skills for Journeyman equivalency will be assessed.
- Experience operating large boring mills.
- Ability to run various manual and CNC machines such as lathes, mills, grinders, slotters, and gear cutting machines including hobbers and shapers.
- Strong commitment to delivering exceptional service and quality outputs.
- Prior workshop experience, preferably with custom machining capabilities.
- Competence in crane operation with knowledge of proper rigging techniques.
