About the Safeguarding Team

Our safeguarding team is dedicated to fostering a safe and supportive environment where all members connected to our club feel secure and respected. At the Academy, we enforce comprehensive safeguarding policies designed specifically to protect young athletes. This includes conducting frequent risk assessments and delivering customized training for coaches and staff focusing on identifying and responding to safeguarding issues.

Collaborating with various departments, we integrate safeguarding protocols into every activity to ensure a nurturing atmosphere in which our young talents can flourish both in sports and beyond.

The Opportunity

This position offers a chance to play a pivotal role at Sunderland AFC's Academy by protecting and supporting young players during their development on and off the field. Reporting directly to the Head of Safeguarding, you will help create a secure, child-focused environment where young individuals feel supported, heard, and empowered to excel.

You will serve as a reliable contact within the Academy, offering guidance, training, and practical assistance to staff members, players, parents, and host families. Your involvement will ensure safeguarding practices are a fundamental part of daily operations.

Your responsibilities will span various activities including matchdays, tours, player workshops, referrals, conducting risk assessments, and attending safeguarding meetings to guarantee proper support is accessible when needed.

Candidate Requirements

We seek a confident, compassionate, and professional individual committed to cultivating a culture that prioritizes the safety and wellbeing of every young person.

The preferred candidate will have completed or be willing to complete Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) training promptly after appointment. Recent experience in safeguarding or child protection, along with practical skills handling safeguarding concerns and disclosures, is essential. Prior work with children or youths and strong knowledge of safeguarding legislation and processes are mandatory.

Exceptional communication skills for engaging with both youth and adults are required, alongside utmost integrity, discretion, and the ability to work flexible hours including evenings and weekends.

Though not compulsory, desirable qualifications include experience in football environments, FA Safeguarding Children or Welfare Officer certification, First Aid or Mental Health First Aid training, and familiarity with FA, EFL, or Premier League safeguarding regulations.

Additional Information

An enhanced DBS check conducted by Sunderland AFC is a prerequisite for this role.
