This role operates during the night shift in the United States.

Role Summary

The Safety Sitter is responsible for maintaining continuous observation of patients requiring close monitoring to prevent interruption of essential therapies or to detect changes in condition. Working under a registered nurse's direction or their designee, the Safety Sitter offers support to patients and their families while providing attentive care, assisting with daily living activities such as ambulation and toileting when necessary.

Primary Responsibilities

• Provide nonstop observation of patients, documenting status every 15 minutes for involuntary behavioral health patients and every hour for medical safety sitting.
• Immediately report to nursing staff any alterations in patient behavior or condition.
• Ensure a secure environment by performing shift-based safety checks and documenting interventions.
• Operate as liaison for telesitter equipment, maintaining and troubleshooting carts, conducting safety guideline inspections, and responding to remote escalation requests.
• Support interdisciplinary care team goals, assist with patient transport including verification of identity and communication with nurses, and assist environmental services and nutrition when not actively engaged in observation.
• Collaborate with patients and families to support healing and wellness, implementing safety protocols to reduce risk and assisting with basic care tasks as assigned.
• Promote infection control by maintaining cleanliness, practicing hand hygiene, following PPE guidelines, and reinforcing universal precautions.
• Utilize effective oral and written communication to coordinate care, update patient progress, and interact respectfully with patients, families, and the healthcare team.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent from an accredited program is required.
• Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification is mandatory at hire.
• Graduation from CNA/CMA program or completion of the first semester of nursing clinicals including nursing fundamentals is preferred.
• Previous experience in healthcare settings is preferred.
• Competence in reading, writing, and speaking English; ability to hear alarms and observe digital readouts.
• Demonstrated excellent customer service, interpersonal skills, and ability to collaborate with healthcare providers.
• Composure and effective functioning under stressful or emergency conditions are essential.
