About the Role
ICON is seeking an experienced UX professional to oversee the user experience for a key focus area within BuildOS, the company's software platform tailored for architects, builders, and construction industry professionals. The position involves leading the entire UX process for tools integrating users with ICON's construction technology, from initial user research to final design specifications for engineering teams. Located at ICON's Austin, TX office, this role reports directly to the Director of Product.
Key Responsibilities
- Conduct regular interviews with architects, engineers, and builders to understand their workflows, challenges, and unmet needs.
- Identify assumptions and research gaps; document findings to inform product roadmaps.
- Analyze and map complex, multi-step user workflows including edge cases, designing for a variety of user expertise levels.
- Define data requirements, integration needs, and potential error states within workflows.
- Create wireframes, interaction flows, and interactive prototypes using Figma or equivalent design tools.
- Perform usability testing with target users, iterating designs based on feedback and verifying technical feasibility with engineering teams.
- Provide detailed, developer-ready design docs including annotated specs, acceptance criteria, and interaction details, working ahead of engineering teams to ensure readiness.
- Collaborate daily with cross-functional teams including product leadership, engineers, and customers to align design decisions with broader company objectives and key results.
Qualifications
- At least 3 years of experience in UX or product design roles.
- A comprehensive portfolio that demonstrates end-to-end design processes from research through execution.
- Proven experience conducting user interviews and leveraging qualitative insights for product design decisions.
- Proficiency with design and prototyping tools such as Figma.
- Experience designing for real-world workflows with constraints, beyond consumer-focused apps.
- Strong communication skills to explain design rationale clearly to engineers, leadership, and clients.
- Ability to thrive in ambiguous situations by defining problems clearly before designing solutions.
Preferred Experience
- Background in construction technology, architecture, manufacturing, robotics, or related hardware-focused industries.
- Familiarity with 3D visualization, CAD systems, or spatial design interfaces.
- Experience authoring product specifications or PRDs alongside design efforts.
- Knowledge of continuous discovery methods or Jobs-to-Be-Done frameworks.
- Expertise in design systems and component-based design methodologies.
