Role Overview

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Permit Technician to join our team in Okeechobee, FL. This role offers an opportunity to engage with various assignments while being supported by a well-equipped team and exciting projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review, receive, and process building permit applications, plans, and supporting documentation ensuring accuracy and completeness.
  • Communicate permitting requirements, fees, and inspection procedures clearly to contractors, homeowners, and the public.
  • Enter permit information into the city's permit software, maintaining both digital and physical files accurately.
  • Coordinate plan reviews among applicants and reviewing departments to facilitate efficient processing.
  • Issue approved building permits, Certificates of Occupancy, and related documentation.
  • Calculate and collect permit and impact fees appropriately.
  • Assist in scheduling building inspections and managing inspection records.
  • Provide outstanding customer service through in-person interactions, phone, and email communications.
  • Maintain confidentiality and ensure compliance with local and state regulations.
  • Perform additional administrative tasks to support the Building Department as needed.

Required Knowledge and Skills

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications.
  • Strong interpersonal skills to deliver excellent customer service.
  • Effective written and verbal communication abilities.
  • Capability to interact positively with colleagues, public, contractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Good organizational skills, attention to detail, time management, telephone etiquette, and people skills.
  • Familiarity with the Florida Building Code and municipal development processes.

Education and Experience

  • Certification as an ICC Permit Technician or related credentials is advantageous.
  • Previous work experience in a Florida municipal or county Building Department is preferred.
