Independence Preparatory Academy, located in Fairfield, AL, is a newly established K-8 school committed to fostering academic rigor, character development, and a joyful learning environment. Since opening in August 2025 with 60 students in kindergarten through second grade, the school aims to expand its capacity to 485 students through eighth grade. The institution prioritizes high-quality instruction and supports every student in achieving success in high school, college, and beyond.

Role Overview

The Lead Custodian is a pivotal member of the founding operations team, directly reporting to the Dean of School Operations. This role encompasses the responsibility of maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and organization of the building, while providing leadership in day-to-day custodial operations. The Lead Custodian ensures that all facilities meet high standards of readiness for learning and that custodial activities operate efficiently and effectively.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain cleanliness throughout classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, cafeteria, and common areas.
• Perform routine tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, dusting, disinfecting surfaces, trash removal, and replenishment of soap, paper towels, and sanitizer dispensers.
• Establish daily priorities and lead the custodial team to ensure all duties are fulfilled with professionalism and efficiency.
• Conduct regular walkthroughs to confirm the school environment is ready for instruction and address any maintenance or cleanliness concerns proactively.
• Carry out minor maintenance activities and promptly report any major repair needs or safety issues.
• Manage inventory by monitoring cleaning supplies and communicating restock requirements to avoid shortages.
• Assist in event preparations and closing processes including setup and breakdown, ensuring the building is secured each day.

Candidate Profile and Expectations

• Previous experience as a custodian, janitor, or comparable role, preferably in a school environment.
• Demonstrated ability to take initiative, lead by example, and maintain high standards of cleanliness and professionalism.
• Exceptional attention to detail and a strong work ethic characterized by reliability and punctuality.
• Capability to work independently and physically perform custodial duties, including lifting up to 50 lbs.
• Must successfully pass a background check as per Alabama state requirements.

Compensation and Benefits

• Immediate employment with an hourly wage of $16.00.
