Lathe Operator

Position Overview

Working alongside the Fleet Foreman and fellow technicians, this role involves operating machinery and equipment essential for maintaining and overhauling Etihad Rail Freight Wheels, supporting the locomotive and wagon fleet. The operator also provides assistance to the Fleet production team as necessary.

Key Responsibilities

• Prepare and execute tasks aligned with established standards, specifications, and maintenance instructions under Foreman's direction.
• Ensure all undertaken work is logged into the maintenance management system and receive authorization via relevant work order signatures.
• Diagnose and repair faults on machines when required.
• Operate and maintain depot plant and machinery.
• Offer training and mentoring to other Fleet technicians.
• Maintain competence in wheel management skills.
• Participate in cross-training to acquire additional expertise such as mechanical and electrical skills, welding, non-destructive testing, and operating lifting equipment.
• Take an active role in continuous improvement by sharing best practices.
• Safeguard the depot’s tools and equipment, keeping them in operational condition.
• Gather and document statistical data as necessary.
• Promote teamwork and contribute actively as a team member.
• Work according to a shift roster to provide cover for a 24/7 operation.
• Report unsafe actions and defective equipment promptly.
• Take responsibility for personal safety and the safety of others.

Education and Qualifications

• A solid foundational education is required.
• Apprenticeship training or relevant engineering qualifications or demonstrable experience is expected.

Experience

• Proven background in wheelshop operations or CNC lathe machine handling.
• Experience in rolling stock maintenance is advantageous.
• Capability to work effectively under harsh environmental conditions and pressure.
• Able to function independently and collaboratively within a team.

• English proficiency at a first language level or advanced competency in written and spoken communication.

• Basic proficiency with computers.
• Analytical capabilities to troubleshoot and resolve problems.
