About AvantStay

AvantStay creates high-end, authentic, technology-enabled short-term rental group stays designed for millennial travelers. The company is venture-backed and expanding quickly within the fast-growing short-term rental market, with an approach that blends customized guest experiences with technology across the entire journey.

Role overview

AvantStay is building a new HOA management capability and is looking for the first person to own and shape it. This is a true build-from-scratch position focused on creating the operating model, tools, and relationships needed to manage HOA matters across the portfolio.

During the first 3 to 9 months, the emphasis will be on assessing the current portfolio, putting systems and processes in place, and building trust and credibility with HOA boards in each market. After that, the role will transition into ongoing management, expansion, and potentially hiring additional support as the function grows.

This is a remote role with about 50% travel expected across the portfolio’s operating states for property visits, HOA board meetings, and regional team collaboration. Some evenings and weekends may be required for board meetings.

What success looks like

  • Well-documented relationships with AvantStay stakeholders, association boards, and other management companies in important markets.
  • A consistent and scalable HOA compliance workflow that can support growth into additional markets.

Key responsibilities

  • Create the HOA management function from the ground up.
  • Review the full portfolio to document current HOA relationships, governing documents, violation history, and overall risk exposure.
  • Set up a centralized tracking system, including the tools and software needed to monitor HOA status, violations, fines, board contacts, and important deadlines.
  • Define escalation paths, operating procedures, and service standards for HOA compliance and dispute handling where they do not yet exist.
  • Establish the team’s charter, scope, and working relationship with Legal, Operations, Owner Relations, and Acquisitions.
  • Build the business case for growth and, when needed, recruit and develop a team to support the function.
  • Act as the main point of contact for HOA boards, property management companies, and community associations across all markets.
  • Review and interpret governing documents such as CC&Rs, insurance obligations, bylaws, and rules as they relate to short-term and vacation rentals.
  • Monitor state and local HOA-related legislation and convert changes into practical guidance for internal teams.
  • Represent the company in HOA board meetings, hearings, and community events, both in person and virtually.
  • Drive resolution of violations, fines, and disputes in coordination with Legal, Operations, and Account Management.
  • Create playbooks and training resources for regional and field teams on HOA compliance best practices.
  • Work with Acquisitions and Growth teams to evaluate HOA risk during underwriting and property onboarding.
  • Build positive, proactive relationships with HOA boards and management companies to reduce friction and support stable operations.
  • Provide regular updates to senior leadership on portfolio-wide HOA risk, trends, and progress in building the function.

Candidate profile

The ideal candidate brings deep HOA or community association experience, especially across multiple states, and is comfortable operating independently in a remote, fast-moving environment. The role calls for strong organization, sound judgment, and the ability to balance competing priorities across a geographically dispersed portfolio.

Requirements

  • At least 7 years of experience in HOA management, community association management, property management, or a closely related area; experience with multi-state portfolios is strongly preferred.
  • CMCA, AMS, or PCAM certification is an advantage, or the willingness to earn one.
  • Practical understanding of state-specific HOA and community association laws, along with short-term rental regulations.
  • Proven ability to juggle priorities across a large, spread-out portfolio.
  • Strong negotiation and relationship-building skills with HOA boards, management companies, and legal counsel.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills, including comfort presenting to boards and executive leadership.
  • Highly organized, self-driven, and comfortable working remotely in a fast-paced setting.
  • Willingness to travel around 50% of the time, including some evenings and weekends for board meetings.

Compensation and benefits

The salary range for this role is $80,000 to $100,000 per year, depending on skills and experience. The package also includes equity in the parent company.

Equal employment opportunity

AvantStay is an equal opportunity employer and welcomes applicants regardless of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, or veteran status.
