Role overview

This role offers the chance to join the community forensic service as one of two Assistant Psychologists. Each full-time appointment will be shared across two of the four Community Forensic Mental Health Teams (CFMHTs) that sit within the service.

Main responsibilities

  • Support the design and delivery of psychological interventions, including one-to-one, group and systemic work, to address the needs of service users.
  • Carry out assertive in-reach into inpatient settings and outreach to community services and organisations to help facilitate transfers between services.

About the service

The CFMHTs are multidisciplinary teams working with adults who have complex mental health and social difficulties and who may pose a significant risk of serious harm to others if support is not in place. The teams provide assessment, treatment, rehabilitation and aftercare for people with severe mental illness and related violent or harmful sexual behaviour.

The aim is to help service users maintain their mental health while living in the community, promoting safety for them and for others around them. The service is centred on the individual and works with service users, and where appropriate their carers and families. Risk management is approached alongside recovery, with an emphasis on relationship-based understanding of risk.

The teams work to build calm, therapeutic relationships through detailed knowledge of each person, including their strengths, vulnerabilities, trauma history, and the social inequalities and racial disparities that may affect mental health and risk.

The CFMHTs operate from a range of sites across the trust footprint and have close links with the forensic inpatient service and specialist forensic teams as part of SLAM Forensic Psychology & Psychotherapy. They are also connected to partner services through the South London Partnership Provider Collaborative community forensic pathway, including teams in Oxleas and South West London & St George's.
