General Labourer

Overview

Doman Building Materials Group is seeking a dedicated General Labourer for its Kootenay Wood Preservers division located in Cranbrook, British Columbia. This full-time role involves diverse tasks within the post, rail, and chipping operations, emphasizing safety, productivity, and quality in handling wood products.

Key Responsibilities

• Comply rigorously with all health and safety policies, including consistent participation in safety meetings.
• Maintain cleanliness and orderliness by performing housekeeping duties to keep the workspace safe.
• Carry out measuring, cutting, sorting, and stacking of wood materials accurately.
• Feed machines manually during peeling and chipping processes.
• Inspect and measure wood pieces to mark cuts and ensure cutting precision.
• Adjust equipment controls to match the required cutting specifications.
• Identify and remove imperfections in wood products.
• Count, sort, and neatly stack finished lumber pieces.
• Safely guide wood against saws and control automatic feeding mechanisms.
• Handle disposal of waste and trash materials appropriately.

Requirements

• Ability to accurately count and identify various types of lumber.
• Strong hand-eye coordination and the ability to maintain focus for extended periods.
• Comfortable working safely near moving machinery.
• Physical capability to lift up to 50 pounds (23 kilograms) with frequent bending, lifting, and reaching during shifts.
• Proficient in English for speaking, reading, and writing tasks.
• Willingness and ability to wear required personal protective equipment including hand, eye, and ear protection.
• Commitment to teamwork and vigilance to maintain a safe work environment.
• Previous experience in wood processing or lumber yard settings is preferred.
• Must own steel-toed safety boots.

Working Conditions

• Work involves exposure to outdoor conditions throughout the year, including hot summers and very cold winters.
• Physically demanding environment requiring stamina to stand, bend, and lift regularly.
• Work may be noisy and dusty with potential hazards from machinery blades.

Education and Employment Details

• Minimum requirement of high school graduation or equivalent.
• Full-time employment with 10-hour shifts, Monday through Thursday from 6:00 AM to 4:30 PM.
• Hourly wage of $23.
• Flexibility to accommodate scheduling changes and occasional overtime or weekend work.

Location and Transportation

• Position located in Lumberton, BC, about a 10 to 15-minute drive southwest of Cranbrook.
• Candidates must provide their own transportation to and from the job site.
