Farm Worker

Role Overview

Heppells Potato Corp is hiring a farm worker to support crop production activities at its rural site in Surrey, British Columbia. This is an on-site position, and all work must be carried out at the physical location with no remote option.

Education and Experience

No formal certificate, diploma, or degree is required. Previous experience is not mandatory, although having some background in similar work is considered an asset.

Work Environment

The role is based in outdoor farming conditions and may involve fruit-and-vegetable mixed farming, as well as other vegetable and melon farming excluding potato. Working conditions can be dusty, hot, noisy, wet or damp, and cold or refrigerated.

Responsibilities

• Remove stones and wood from fields before cultivation.
• Carry out planting, crop care, and irrigation activities.
• Pick and collect crops at harvest time.
• Use, monitor, and service farm machinery and equipment.
• Inspect produce to confirm quality and market readiness.
• Harvest vegetables by hand when needed.
• Use hoeing methods between crop rows.

Crop and Equipment Experience

Preferred crop experience includes melons and potatoes. Familiarity with automated irrigation systems, sprayers or dusters, tractors, loaders, planting machinery, and tillage equipment is relevant. Experience with automated environmental control systems is also noted.

The role requires reliable own transportation.

Working Conditions and Physical Demands

The job is fast paced and can involve pressure, strict deadlines, repetitive duties, heavy lifting, and sustained physical effort. Tasks may require sitting, standing, and walking in combination. Other demands include hand-eye coordination, the ability to tell colours apart, sound discrimination, long periods of standing, and frequent bending, crouching, and kneeling.
