About Strescon Limited
Founded in 1963, Strescon Limited has established itself as the leading manufacturer of precast, pre-stressed concrete products in Eastern Canada. Serving primarily the Atlantic Provinces, New England in the USA, and Bermuda, the company produces a diverse range of architectural and structural concrete items including bridge girders, wall panels, parking garages, hollow-core planking, piling, and deck slabs. Strescon operates two main facilities: a 70,000 square foot plant in Saint John, New Brunswick, and a 50,000 square foot plant in Bedford, Nova Scotia, plus an additional 32,000 square foot facility in Saint John that manufactures standard concrete drainage components like pipes, manholes, and catch basins.
Role Summary
Working collaboratively with the estimating team and cross-functional departments, the Estimator is responsible for compiling and assessing proposals, shop drawings, and specifications to generate accurate project cost estimates. This involves calculating costs related to labor, materials, equipment, subcontracting, and scheduling. The ideal candidate must competently interpret architectural and structural precast drawings, navigate specialized software such as Excel and Tekla, and demonstrate a detail-oriented approach while effectively managing multiple priorities and deadlines. This role is based in Saint John and supports operations at both Strescon locations.
Key Responsibilities
- Analyze bid documents including specifications, drawings, addendums, alternatives, delivery schedules, and bidding deadlines.
- Prepare comprehensive bid submission packages including quotation letters, bid forms, pricing for alternates, and schedules.
- Coordinate efficiently with subcontractors and suppliers to send and receive estimating documents.
- Prepare precise material take-offs and cost estimates within set deadlines to meet bid submission requirements.
- Utilize software tools for data management and quick access to necessary information.
- Review estimates and submission materials with the sales and management teams to ensure accuracy.
- Contribute to departmental success by meeting project timelines and budget goals.
- Communicate proactively with internal teams and manufacturing plants to optimize production and efficiency.
- Represent the estimating department and the company professionally when interacting with internal and external stakeholders.
Essential Qualifications and Skills
- A Bachelor's degree or college diploma in civil engineering, engineering technology, construction technology, or equivalent experience in architecture or estimating.
- Capability to read and interpret detailed construction drawings.
- Proficient with software applications related to estimation and reporting, especially Excel and Tekla.
- Competency in basic mathematical calculations including metric to imperial conversions.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office suite.
- Ability to maintain composure and productivity under pressure.
- Team-oriented mindset with a strong desire for professional development.
- Exceptional attention to detail and accuracy.
