Job Overview

The Dynamic Positioning Operator (DPO) serves as the junior watchstander on dynamic positioning systems, operating under direct supervision of the Senior DPO. This role involves maintaining the vessel's position during operations, monitoring system integrity, and providing navigational watch when not on DP duty. The DPO coordinates communication across rig floor, ROV, and engine control to sustain operational safety and efficiency.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate and optimize vessel positioning and heading to reduce forces required for station-keeping using automated and manual controls.
  • Constantly evaluate current and forecasted weather and oceanographic conditions to adjust vessel systems proactively.
  • Maintain situational awareness, minimizing distractions to uphold prudent watchkeeping standards adhering to WSOG, Standing and Night Orders, and company policies.
  • Manage the DP system and related equipment, performing preventative maintenance, recording data accurately, and coordinating with the Master and Rig Manager for vessel movements.
  • Serve as the vessel's radio operator, maintaining GMDSS and radio watch, and support navigation and watch duties during transit.
  • Assist and coordinate with multidisciplinary teams including deck crews, Driller, Master, Chief Mate, and technical experts to ensure safe and efficient marine operations.
  • Ensure all DP alarms and system anomalies are promptly addressed and recorded, maintaining power reserves and operational readiness.
  • Use onboard simulators to enhance proficiency and update navigation publications and charts regularly.
  • Implement safety policies, lead firefighting and damage control efforts, and participate actively in safety meetings and emergency drills.
  • Perform voyage planning, equipment upkeep, and assist with ballast, bulk tanks, and other vessel systems as needed.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Marine Transportation is preferred.
  • Minimum 1 year experience on DP-enabled vessels in an industrial marine environment.
  • Holds an unlimited DPO certificate issued by the Nautical Institute.
  • Possession of USCG Unlimited Tonnage Any Oceans Third Mate's License or an equivalent credential.
  • Completion of all position-specific training within the required timeframes.
  • Proficiency with dynamic positioning control systems, office software, and related operational equipment.

Additional Information

  • Ensure adherence to safety and environmental compliance protocols in line with company standards.
  • Participate in maintenance and repair schedules for DP systems, coordinating spares and technical support where necessary.
  • Maintain detailed logs, reports, and checklists to enhance operational efficiency and minimize downtime.
  • Promote the company’s safety culture, including use of Hazard Identification Tools and STOP job planning processes.
