Director, Lifelong Learning

Overview

The Director of Lifelong Learning is responsible for shaping and managing the strategy and operations of the educational portfolio at the Arboretum. This role oversees diverse educational formats such as workshops, lectures, cultural events, and community programs aimed at inspiring learners of all ages and fostering a deeper relationship with nature. Reporting to the Vice President of Learning, the director spearheads planning, staff management, budgeting, partnerships, and cross-departmental teamwork to deliver innovative and mission-aligned learning experiences for various audiences.

Key Responsibilities

• Lead the strategic direction and oversight of lifelong learning initiatives, catering to adult and multi-age groups through programs, classes, workshops, and sensory events.
• Design, implement, and assess engaging educational offerings that promote inclusivity, accessibility, and adherence to the Arboretum's mission.
• Identify growth opportunities to broaden program reach, boost participation and revenue, and attract new audience segments.
• Recruit, supervise, and mentor learning team managers by setting goals, clarifying expectations, and fostering professional development.
• Provide continual feedback and guidance to staff and facilitators to ensure consistent, high-quality programming and growth.
• Manage all facets of lifelong learning programming, including strategic design and timely execution with clear milestones and deliverables.
• Continuously evaluate and improve operational procedures and program delivery methods for enhanced organizational effectiveness.
• Develop and control budgets, staffing plans, resource allocation, and revenue targets to support sustainable growth and innovation.
• Oversee data collection, program impact evaluation, and reporting to support institutional goals, grants, and strategic plans.
• Cultivate and sustain partnerships with community groups, educational institutions, presenters, and instructors to amplify program impact.
• Collaborate across internal departments for smooth event logistics, communications, facility coordination, staffing, and overall guest experience.

Required Qualifications and Skills

• Bachelor’s degree preferred in education, museum studies, public programs, community outreach, hospitality, event management, or related areas.
• Minimum seven years of relevant experience involving lifelong learning, community engagement, or event management.
• Proven leadership skills in supervising teams, developing staff, and encouraging a collaborative, innovative culture.
• Experience managing budgets and long-term strategic planning.
• Competence in Microsoft Office and project management software.
• Availability to work occasional evenings, weekends, and holidays as necessary.
• Successful completion of all pre-employment screenings including background check and drug testing.
