About the Role

The Wall Street Journal seeks a seasoned designer to join a prestigious team dedicated to pioneering visual storytelling through our most ambitious journalism projects designed for digital consumption. This position involves crafting innovative story experiences that integrate visual elements such as photography, illustration, and data visualization alongside comprehensive text features.

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing both modular reusable components and bespoke custom presentations, working collaboratively alongside news designers, developers, and information graphics specialists.

We value individuals who are deeply curious and at ease working where journalism, design, and technology intersect. The ability to both design and implement those designs is essential. Opportunities for skill enhancement will be available based on individual expertise.

This position reports to the Digital Design Editor and requires presence at our New York City office.

Key Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Digital Design Editor to identify and prioritize stories requiring distinctive visual approaches, spanning from quick-turnaround pieces to extensive enterprise journalism.
  • Collaborate closely with reporters, editors, and fellow visual journalists to develop ideas and construct digital stories deploying WSJ and external platforms.
  • Apply exemplary news judgment and employ technically sound methodologies in design execution.
  • Remain updated on current visual design trends and techniques applicable to evolving digital storytelling formats.
  • Operate efficiently within tight deadlines, which may occasionally necessitate working outside normal office hours.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum of three years’ professional experience in a comparable role, with a solid grasp of news media and digital publishing dynamics.
  • Advanced proficiency in interaction design, layout arrangement, color theory, and typography tailored for digital platforms.
  • Hands-on experience in front-end development using modern web technologies such as React, Handlebars, or Tailwind CSS.
  • Familiarity with storyboarding and prototyping software like Figma to conceptualize visual narratives.
  • Knowledge of mobile-first story-building principles.
  • Proficiency with Adobe Illustrator and ai2html tools.
  • A passionate commitment to journalism and innovation.

Additional Details and Equal Opportunity

Applicants should submit a resume, a cover letter explaining their approach to the role, and five portfolio examples by August 14th. Early application is advised as the position may be filled before the deadline. We encourage applications from all qualified candidates without discrimination based on race, color, religion, gender, age, nationality, veteran status, disability, or any other protected characteristic under law.

Reasonable accommodations are available for applicants with disabilities in the application and interviewing process upon request via email, specifying the needed assistance.

Compensation and Benefits

The base salary range for this role is $110,000 to $130,000 annually, reflecting a good faith estimate and subject to variation based on experience, skills, and location. Bonus eligibility and benefit packages—including health, retirement, and well-being programs—are offered comprehensively.
