Role overview

KPMB is hiring a Designer (Level 1) for its new Cambridge, Massachusetts office. The position is suited to someone who is enthusiastic about architecture, drawing, and high-quality design work, and who wants to grow through mentorship from experienced senior staff. The role contributes to design concepts, drawings, presentations, and technical documentation under supervision.

The ideal candidate brings early-career technical and design ability, a strong eye for detail, and an understanding of how buildings are constructed. The role also calls for teamwork, collaboration, and the ability to work independently when needed.

Technical work and design development

• Create detailed technical drawings in Revit and build 3D models in Rhino to help communicate design intent and advance design development.
• Use basic knowledge of building systems, construction methods, assemblies, and materials to support project delivery.
• Apply building code, zoning, and architectural standards in documentation with guidance from senior staff.
• Help shape design layouts by researching, reviewing spatial planning and occupancy information, and organizing relevant data.
• Update drawings after reviews, redlines, site measurements, and findings from existing conditions.
• Work according to BIM standards and the firm’s practice requirements.
• Contribute ideas during design discussions and respond constructively to feedback from senior colleagues.
• Seek input proactively and reflect on your work to identify opportunities for improvement.

Project coordination and support

• Take part in team meetings, share progress updates, and use internal resources effectively.
• Assist architects, engineers, and other consultants with project coordination as needed.
• Keep project records organized and maintain accurate, accessible files.
• Turn project goals into practical tasks and understand how your work contributes to successful outcomes.
• Watch for constructability, code, and consultant coordination issues as part of basic design risk awareness.
• Deliver work on time and to the expected quality level to support team accountability and reduce project risk.

Innovation and sustainability

• Keep up with industry developments and technical innovations, maintaining curiosity and a habit of ongoing learning.
• Build knowledge of sustainable design and apply it appropriately within project work, following project-specific and firm-wide environmental standards.
• Take part in post-project reviews and use lessons learned to improve future work.

Candidate profile

• Bachelor’s and master’s degree in architectural studies.
• Up to 2 years of experience in an architectural design role, including internships and co-op placements.
• Working knowledge of current versions of Revit, BIM tools, Bluebeam, MS Office, Adobe Creative Cloud, and 3D visualization software.
• Ability to produce working drawings and renderings at a foundational level.
• Understanding of building technology, assemblies, construction methods, and material use in functional design.
• Familiarity with the Massachusetts State Building Code (MSBC) and the International Code Council (ICC).
• Evidence of participation in firm or academic committees, team-building, or cultural initiatives.
• A portfolio that shows care and attention to detail.
• Curiosity, resourcefulness, and the self-awareness to know when to ask for support.
• Strong verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills.
• Ability to work both collaboratively and independently.
• Comfort managing multiple deadlines and prioritizing work in a fast-paced setting.
