Role Overview
The Deputy Coroner serves as a critical support to the Coroner and chief deputy Coroner by acting as a primary death investigator. Responsibilities include conducting death scene investigations, authorizing cremations, and performing additional tasks as assigned. This appointment operates on an as-needed basis with no fixed on-call requirements, functioning as a per-call position.
Key Responsibilities
- Evaluate death notifications from medical and care facilities to determine jurisdictional requirements.
- Respond promptly to death scenes and conduct comprehensive investigations involving natural and non-natural causes.
- Document findings via photographs of the scene and the decedent, conduct physical examinations, and interview relevant parties such as witnesses and family members.
- Review medical records and collaborate with law enforcement, funeral directors, and healthcare providers.
- Ascertain causes and circumstances surrounding death and compile detailed investigative reports encapsulating all scene and case information.
- Authorize cremations in line with regulatory standards.
Qualifications
- Minimum of five years' experience in a healthcare-related profession, such as Nursing, Paramedicine, or as a Physician's Assistant.
- Alternative combinations of education and experience offering equivalent knowledge and skills may be considered.
- Holding a valid Wisconsin driver's license with a driving record compliant with county requirements.
- Completion of required death investigation training provided post-hiring.
Additional Details
This position includes necessary training for death investigations provided after hire. There are currently no ongoing on-call demands, and the deputy coroner role is activated as needed. Candidates can expect a collaborative work environment involving multiple external agencies and community stakeholders.
