About the Role

Marathon Petroleum Corporation is seeking a Data Analyst or Senior Data Analyst to join the Value Chain Optimization team, specifically within the Value Chain Insights group. This role focuses on delivering advanced analytics and actionable insights to enhance decision-making by providing trustworthy and timely reporting. The position contributes primarily to the Dashboarding & Reporting vertical, with responsibilities including the creation, maintenance, and enhancement of dashboards and consistent reporting outputs that translate performance metrics and planning model outcomes into clear, reliable decision support tools.

Key Duties

  • Obtain, validate, and transform data from authorized sources to produce dependable datasets for dashboards and recurring reports, while documenting assumptions and refresh procedures.
  • Conduct descriptive and diagnostic analyses to explain key performance indicator trends, identify influencing factors, and highlight notable exceptions within dashboards and reports.
  • Create standardized and repeatable calculations or metrics consistently used across dashboards and reports.
  • Use basic statistical and variance analyses to validate reporting accuracy, discover anomalies, and ensure audit readiness of results.
  • Design and update Power BI dashboards and standardized reports that are straightforward, auditable, and uniform across planning cycles and organizational locations.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to gather requirements, prototype visualizations, communicate insights, and provide guidance to enhance dashboard adoption and accurate use.
  • Ensure the quality and integrity of reporting data via validation, reconciliation, and monitoring refresh processes; troubleshoot with IT and source system owners as needed.
  • Work closely with planning, operations, and commercial teams to prioritize reporting projects aligned with agreed KPI definitions and standards.
  • Continuously refine reporting processes to reduce manual efforts, improve refresh reliability, and simplify user workflows.
  • Adhere to data governance and reporting standards; contribute to documentation detailing data flows, definitions, lineage, and logic to maintain report fitness for purpose.
  • Support sustainable reporting infrastructure by defining requirements, testing deliverables, and coordinating with IT/data engineering for automation and performance improvements.
  • Maintain consistent KPI definitions and calculation methodologies used across recurring reporting and dashboards.
  • Manage dashboard lifecycle activities, including version control, release notes, collecting user feedback, and making iterative improvements.
  • Develop comparative views showing differences between scenarios or periods to aid decision support.
  • Create monitoring and communication tools that support the Plan-to-Produce process through scheduled reporting outputs and templates.

Educational and Experience Requirements

Data Analyst:

  • Bachelor's degree in Business, Engineering, Computer Science, Information Systems, Mathematics, or a related discipline is required.
  • Minimum two years of relevant professional experience.

Senior Data Analyst:

  • Bachelor's degree as above.
  • At least four years of professional experience.
