About the role
This position is for a home delivery driver serving Tesco customers from the Bolton Horwich Extra store in Horwich, England. The job is active, practical, and varied, with no two shifts looking exactly the same. You will be the public face of Tesco on the road, meeting customers at their homes and making sure their shopping reaches them safely, on time, and with a friendly service.
Working pattern and availability
The required availability window is Saturday and Sunday from 07:00 to 19:00. Scheduled hours will be placed within these windows, and shift timings will be shared with 3 weeks' notice. Tesco guarantees a minimum of 16 hours per week for new colleagues, while candidates who want fewer hours may be considered for a minimum of 12 hours per week. Flexible availability that closely matches the advertised window may still be acceptable.
Pay
The hourly starting rate is £14.18. For stores located inside the M25, the rate rises to £15.45 per hour. Depending on location, extra payments may also be available.
Role overview
As a Customer Delivery Driver, you will do more than drive a van. The job involves customer service, careful handling of goods, communicating changes to orders, and supporting shoppers with substitutions and refunds where needed. You will work independently for much of the day, but managers and colleagues are available at the store base when support is required.
Key duties
- Deliver customer shopping accurately and within the agreed delivery slot.
- Keep the vehicle, trays, and work area clean, orderly, and free of rubbish.
- Wash trays as part of the tray-cleaning process.
- Load the van as needed and check that it is roadworthy before setting off.
- Speak with customers about any order changes, including unavailable items and substitutions.
- Offer refunds for any substitutions the customer does not want.
- Treat products and deliveries with care, as if they were your own.
- Explain clearly that substitutions will not result in any extra charge.
- Call the customer if you expect to arrive early.
- Contact the store or centre if you are likely to be 30 minutes late or more.
- Leave the back yard tidy, with rubbish removed and litter picked up when noticed.
What Tesco is looking for
- Strong teamwork and the ability to build good relationships with colleagues.
- A friendly, welcoming manner with customers and co-workers.
- Attention to the changing needs of customers and comfort with adapting to change.
- Energy and motivation to go beyond expectations while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
- A collaborative mindset and willingness to share improvement ideas with managers and colleagues.
- A full or automatic UK, EU, or EEA driving licence held for at least 12 months, with no more than 3 penalty points.
- The ability to follow GB Domestic Driving Rules.
Benefits
- Holiday entitlement starting at 20 days plus one personal day, increasing to 22 days after 12 months, in addition to bank holidays.
- Flexible working requests available from day one.
- 10% discount, increasing to 15% on pay-day weekends, with potential savings of up to £2,000 per year through the colleague Clubcard and an extra card to share with family outside your home.
- Free wellbeing support covering mental, physical, and life-related resources.
- Life cover equal to five times pay and an award-winning pension with matching contributions up to 7.5%.
- Access to a range of optional benefits, including discounts, shares, and cycle-to-work schemes.
- Uniform provided, along with policies designed to support different life moments.
- Access to colleague networks that bring together people from different backgrounds.
