About The Team
The Credit team is responsible for safeguarding Stripe by overseeing credit risk across our most substantial and complex clients. Utilizing underwriting expertise and data-driven analysis, the team makes informed decisions throughout the customer lifecycle, from onboarding through to recovery processes. The mission is to facilitate Stripe’s expansion by ensuring measured, confident credit decisions for top-risk merchants.
Role Overview
As a Credit Analyst Underwriter within the North America Strategy Risk team, you will manage underwriting and monitoring for a portfolio comprising some of our largest and fastest-growing clients. Your efforts directly influence Stripe’s growth ambitions while controlling credit exposure. This role demands collaboration across Sales, Legal, Treasury, and Finance departments to deliver high-impact risk management solutions.
Key Responsibilities
- Engage directly with prominent merchants, including venture-backed startups and established companies, to assess their financial health and business viability.
- Offer customized credit risk assessments and strategies that balance risk mitigation with client growth facilitation.
- Maintain comprehensive portfolio management by understanding risk factors across diverse sectors, regions, and operational structures.
- Provide actionable insights to senior leadership, assisting in decisions related to onboarding practices and merchant pricing.
- Contribute to the enhancement of risk assessment tools and workflows to achieve critical performance metrics like credit loss thresholds and portfolio coverage.
- Coordinate with both internal teams and external partners to support merchants worldwide effectively.
Qualifications and Experience
- A minimum of three years' experience in commercial credit underwriting, financial risk modeling, or cash flow forecasting.
- Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Economics, Statistics, or a related discipline.
- Proficient understanding of accounting fundamentals and the ability to analyze financial documents and business models from various industries.
- Capability to translate complex business and financial information into coherent narratives outlining credit risk and potential mitigation.
- Excellent verbal, written, and analytical communication skills.
- Strong attention to detail with aptitude managing multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
- Comfort engaging with senior executives such as CFOs and CEOs.
- Empathy towards entrepreneurs and a commitment to supporting business success.
Preferred Skills
- Advanced technical skills, especially with SQL proficiency.
- Expertise in data visualization coupled with enthusiasm for analytics.
- Experience in technology or other fast-growing, high-velocity settings.
