About Counseling In Schools

Counseling In Schools (CIS) is a community-focused nonprofit established in 1986 dedicated to supporting the emotional and social development of children to help them succeed academically and in life. The organization collaborates closely with local schools, shelters, and community groups in New York City to provide programs and services led by licensed mental health and youth development professionals. These programs empower children, families, educators, and administrators with tools to address and manage challenges effectively.

Position Overview

The Community School Director will lead CIS’s partnership in a high school located in the Flatlands/Canarsie area of Brooklyn. This role requires balancing strategic vision with operational detail, acting as the central liaison connecting CIS, the school leadership, families, and community partners. Responsibilities include relationship building, team management, budgeting, data management, and ensuring programs align with school goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the main contact connecting CIS, NYC Public Schools’ Office of Community Schools, and the school community.
  • Develop and nurture partnerships with local organizations, vendors, subcontractors, and community stakeholders.
  • Design and facilitate engaging family involvement activities such as workshops, orientations, celebrations, volunteer roles, and community events.
  • Oversee daily operations of emergency resource programs including the food pantry and clothing closet.
  • Support initiatives targeting attendance improvement, chronic absenteeism reduction, student engagement, school culture enhancement, and wellness programming.
  • Lead school support teams and support meetings focused on student interventions, tiered supports, and crisis response coordination.
  • Collaborate with the Principal and School Leadership Team to advance educational priorities and strategic goals.
  • Manage planning and execution of school-wide projects, events, and partnerships, ensuring timely follow-up and communication with stakeholders.
  • Supervise CIS on-site staff to ensure team effectiveness and compliance.
  • Ensure adherence to agency data systems and documentation protocols.
  • Administer program finances including budget oversight, purchasing, invoice and expense tracking, and fiscal reporting.
  • Analyze data from attendance, program participation, and community surveys to guide strategic decision-making and enhance student outcomes.
  • Prepare comprehensive reports, presentations, spreadsheets, and strategic plans for both school and CIS leadership.

Qualifications

  • Required: Bachelor's degree; Preferred: Master’s degree.
  • Minimum of three years' experience in education, youth development, community schools, nonprofit leadership, school operations, or project management.
  • Prior experience managing budgets is essential.
  • Preferred experience working directly in a school environment.
  • Proven experience supervising staff and managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with school leadership, educators, families, community partners, and other stakeholders.
  • Excellent skills in relationship-building, problem-solving, organization, and communication.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Workspace, Excel or Google Sheets, Canva, and creating presentations.
  • Strong commitment to educational equity, youth development, family engagement, and building community partnerships.

Benefits & Paid Time Off

  • More than 30 days of paid time off annually plus paid holidays.
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, and vision insurance options including a fully employer-paid health plan.
  • Pre-tax transportation benefits via a transit check program.
