Position Overview
As the Chief Engineer, you will oversee the maintenance and operational efficiency of the hotel's physical infrastructure. Your role involves managing mechanical, electrical, HVAC, and related systems to ensure smooth functioning and guest comfort.
Key Duties and Responsibilities
- Conduct regular inspections to assess the safety and maintenance of the hotel structure and all associated technical systems.
- Confirm completion of routine maintenance and repairs across public areas, meeting spaces, outlets, back-of-house sections, and external zones.
- Assist in recruiting, training, supervising, and disciplining the engineering staff, including duty engineers, plumbers, painters, joiners, and apprentices.
- Comply with corporate procurement policies, contractor bidding processes, budget controls, and health & safety regulations.
- Maintain effective energy management and preventive maintenance plans, and provide specialized training on equipment use and energy efficiency to other departments.
- Regularly update general management about the condition of facilities with recommendations for cost-effective maintenance solutions using computerized reporting tools.
- Oversee daily engineering team activities in coordination with the Assistant Chief Engineer.
- Prepare and manage annual Repair & Maintenance, Utilities, and Capital budgets, ensuring expenditures stay within limits.
- Coordinate capital project releases and manage associated technical work while ensuring compliance with building codes and regulations.
- Develop, update, and implement departmental training matrices and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
- Create manpower schedules based on hotel business needs and supervise daily and weekly staff rosters.
- Design and ensure the effectiveness of preventive maintenance programs for all building systems to maintain comfort and safety.
- Prioritize maintenance work in line with guest requirements.
- Ensure comprehensive use of Maximo software for maintenance management by the team and other departments.
- Supervise staff and contractors to guarantee optimal performance, efficiency, safety, and adherence to legislation.
- Review and enforce Security and Safety procedures per legal and corporate policies.
- Conduct regular fire safety checks, coordinate with fire authorities, and ensure fire safety infrastructure is functional.
- Manage key systems jointly with the Information Systems Manager, including administration of electronic locks and security levels.
- Implement and monitor the hotel’s energy management initiatives and oversee water treatment systems.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering, Facilities Management, or a related discipline.
- At least five years' experience in hotel engineering or facilities management, with a minimum of three years in a senior role such as Chief Engineer, Assistant Chief Engineer, or Engineering Manager.
- Experience in an international hotel chain is highly desirable.
- Background managing engineering operations across large hotels or multiple properties is advantageous.
- Expertise in preventive maintenance, utility management, capital expenditure projects, and engineering budgeting is essential.
- Comprehensive knowledge of HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical systems, generators, kitchen and laundry equipment, water treatment, and fire & life safety systems.
- Registration as an Engineer or membership with a recognized professional engineering organization is a plus.
- Strong familiarity with hotel engineering systems, building management systems (BMS), preventive maintenance, and statutory compliance.
