Job description
About the Role
You will oversee a CAD drafting team within a mechanical and HVAC context, ensuring all outputs are accurate, consistent, and ready for the field without revisions. This position offers an opportunity to lead a team in a way that prioritizes mentorship, quality, and clear standards—empowering drafters as designers rather than just production workers.
Key Responsibilities
- Guarantee every drawing undergoes a thorough review before distribution, minimizing internal errors and addressing root causes when mistakes occur.
- Maintain and enforce uniform standards, templates, and conventions so that work is consistent across all projects and team members.
- Proactively manage workloads by aligning team members with project timelines and schedules, adjusting assignments to prevent delays.
- Respond promptly—within one business day—to inquiries from field and project teams, fostering smooth workflows and reliable communication.
- Conduct weekly coordination meetings with project managers to stay ahead of upcoming demands and maintain trustful relationships.
- Lead the team through daily engagement, coaching, and timely performance reviews that provide clear feedback and growth paths.
- Promote ownership of design elements among drafters, supporting their professional development and retention.
Candidate Profile
- Minimum seven years of CAD drafting experience specifically in HVAC, mechanical, or construction-related environments.
- At least three years managing CAD or drafting teams, emphasizing people leadership over technical drafting tasks.
- Proven success in maintaining team cohesion through consistent communication, coaching, and on-time reviews.
- Expertise with advanced CAD tools applicable to mechanical and HVAC construction projects.
- Knowledge of BIM coordination and integration of CAD outputs into field and project workflows.
- Experience managing standards, templates, and quality control across several projects simultaneously.
- Strong understanding of construction documentation, shop drawings, and Request for Information (RFI) workflows.
- Local residency or strong ties to the Scarborough, ME area with a commitment to long-term stability.
- Preferred qualifications include technical school attendance, an associate degree, or formal CAD training.
- Certainly advantageous are CAD or BIM certifications.
Work Environment and Culture
The company fosters a culture where leaders have real authority, standards are respected at all levels, and drafters are treated as skilled professionals rather than assembly line workers. The workplace values lasting relationships and pride in delivering flawless work that requires no rework or clarifications in the field.
Compensation and Benefits
The salary range for this position is from $100,000 to $130,000 annually. Comprehensive benefits details will be provided in the interview process. Candidates are encouraged to bring any questions regarding the benefits package.
Additional Information
This role is not suited for those who prefer indirect leadership or avoid direct engagement with their team members. The ideal candidate values hands-on coaching, transparent communication, and maintaining standards firmly yet diplomatically. This offers an opportunity for a leader who desires a lasting leadership position with a dedicated team and a meaningful impact.
