Job description
Role Overview
This position is for a Business Data & AI Specialist embedded within a Gas Transmission business, focusing on applying data science, AI/ML, and automation to support operational priorities such as reliability, compliance, asset management, and decision-making processes. The role partners with multiple operational teams including engineering, integrity, records, and asset management to define challenges and convert them into actionable data-driven solutions aligned with the business environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Collaborate with stakeholders across operations and engineering disciplines to identify and prioritize AI and data opportunities, translating operational concerns into analytic or modeling challenges while considering regulatory and operational contexts.
- Conduct data extraction, cleaning, transformation, and validation on both structured and unstructured data sources; perform exploratory analysis to identify trends, anomalies, and areas for improvement relevant to Gas Transmission operations.
- Develop, validate, and optimize machine learning models including classification, regression, clustering, and natural language processing tailored to specific business issues.
- Implement Generative and Agentic AI solutions incorporating prompt engineering and automation of workflows.
- Communicate analytical findings clearly to both technical teams and business stakeholders; prepare reproducible analyses, reports, and visual dashboards to facilitate day-to-day decisions.
- Maintain thorough documentation ensuring transparency, auditability, and seamless knowledge transfer.
- Write high-quality, clean Python code adhering to security and quality standards using shared repositories such as Git.
- Support model deployment and operational maintenance including monitoring model inputs, outputs, and performance metrics consistent with MLOps practices.
- Work alongside various departments including Data & Science Services (D&SS) and Technology Information Services (TIS) to ensure solutions meet operational demands and identify enhancement possibilities.
- Continuously update knowledge on practical advances in data science, machine learning, and AI relevant to the business sector.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Engineering, Statistics, Mathematics, or closely related field.
- Extensive experience in applying data analytics, AI, and ML to business and operational challenges within the energy industry, demonstrating capability to convert business requirements into effective solutions.
- Advanced programming skills in Python and proficiency with key data science libraries.
- Strong foundation in applied machine learning techniques and statistical methods.
- Proven aptitude for effectively communicating insights and recommendations to diverse business audiences.
- Collaborative approach with experience working cross-functionally beyond technical teams.
- Capability to operate autonomously within defined project scopes and to contribute collaboratively to team efforts.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Generative AI models, large language models, or agent-based AI workflows in business contexts.
- Working knowledge of SQL and experience managing operational or analytics databases.
- Competency in designing and developing dashboards or reports, such as with Power BI.
- Familiarity with cloud platforms, preferably Azure, but also AWS or GCP acceptable.
- Experience within regulated industries or sectors related to engineering, operations, or energy.
- Exposure to environments requiring rigorous documentation and audit compliance.
