Job Overview

This role involves overseeing on-site supervision, cleaning, and related services at educational premises under the guidance of designated management, ensuring compliance with relevant policies. The supervisor is responsible for managing assistant building supervisors and cleaning staff where applicable.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain security of premises including school meal facilities; open and secure buildings and grounds, managing keys and alarm systems.
  • Monitor and operate fire alarms, burglar alarms, security cameras, and respond to security breaches or incidences promptly.
  • Manage mechanical and electrical systems including boilers, lighting, heating, routine maintenance, and fuel requisitions, ensuring energy conservation.
  • Conduct periodic inspections, equipment replacements up to 3.35 meters, and report defects such as firefighting equipment issues.
  • Supervise cleaning staff and carry out cleaning duties ensuring standards meet Education Authority requirements; manage supplies and equipment for maintenance of school premises including hard surfaces, grounds, drains, bins, and signage.
  • Provide porterage support including receipt and movement of goods, setting up rooms for various uses, and refuse management.
  • Handle administrative tasks such as report preparation, contractor oversight, record keeping for consumables and staff attendance, and ensuring compliance with health and safety regulations.
  • Perform handyperson tasks within competence and receive ongoing training to support role execution and potential higher-level duties.

Person Specification and Selection Criteria

Applicants must clearly demonstrate on their application how they meet essential and desirable criteria, affecting shortlisting and interview processes.

  • Essential Experience: Minimum 3 months working as an assistant supervisor, building supervisor, caretaker, or cleaner in a school environment; or holding a recognised trade qualification such as plumbing, joinery, or electrical.
  • Will be a key holder prepared for call-outs during unsocial hours.
  • Additional Essential Knowledge: Familiarity with role expectations, health and safety and manual handling regulations, security system operations.
  • Proven people management abilities to motivate and lead a team effectively.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, administrative, planning, and decision-making skills.
  • Alignment with the school’s values and ethos.
  • Desirable Qualifications and Experience: NEBOSH Health and Safety certification or equivalent; experience with industrial cleaning equipment, key holding including alarm operation, and supervising staff.
