Department Overview

The Facilities Management Division (FMD) is UGA’s largest division, comprising over 800 professionals who oversee maintenance and operations of campus landscapes, buildings, and infrastructure to ensure sustainable long-term stewardship.

Position Summary

The Building Services Worker I role centers on keeping university buildings clean and maintained. Primary duties involve sweeping, dust mopping, wet mopping floors, both high and low dusting of horizontal and vertical surfaces, and using small custodial machinery like vacuum cleaners, wet/dry vacuums, and T-1 scrubbers that require minimal training. Additional tasks include cleaning windows, walls, furniture, and equipment across campus; collecting and disposing of trash and recyclables; locking and unlocking buildings; assisting with supply deliveries; sanitizing surfaces like glass, door handles, switches, blinds, and furniture; restocking restroom and janitorial supplies; and performing safe cleanup of bodily fluids using bloodborne pathogen kits. The position also involves light bulb replacement on ladders not exceeding 8 feet and occasional other related duties.

Work Schedule and Physical Requirements

Standard work hours are Monday through Friday from 7:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Some weekend, evening, or on-call work may be required. Physical demands include lifting and pushing/pulling weights up to 40 pounds, bending, squatting, kneeling, frequently working with hands overhead, climbing stairs, walking extensively between buildings, and working from ladders up to 8 feet high.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Minimum of a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Capability to perform custodial tasks and operate basic cleaning machines.
  • Ability to communicate and collaborate effectively with team members.
  • Willingness to work varied shifts including weekends and after hours as needed.
  • Comfort with physical activities such as prolonged walking, ladder use, and lifting.

Additional Information

The position is designated as essential. Security access is required for this role, although it does not involve financial responsibilities or direct care of minors or patients. A background check, including a criminal and credit review, is mandatory prior to employment. Applicants must demonstrate the ability to read and follow English instructions pertaining to safety and job duties.

Compensation and Benefits

The advertised annual salary is $35,200. UGA provides retirement through TRS and offers employee benefits to full-time eligible staff.
