Yard Scaler

Overview

Located in The Pas, Manitoba, the Yard Scaler operates under the guidance of the Scaling Supervisor to accurately measure and document all wood harvested, including both company and purchased timber. This role ensures that scaling is consistent and adheres strictly to Manitoba and Saskatchewan provincial standards as well as company policies. The position is also responsible for confirming that all mill deliveries comply with prescribed quality benchmarks.

Key Responsibilities

• Weigh and categorize log trucks at scales, process log rail shipments, scale timber, and evaluate log quality with a strong emphasis on safety protocols.
• Conduct monthly inventory counts of yard stock and prepare detailed reports.
• Perform bush scaling as necessary to assist the harvesting team in volume assessments.
• Carry out all tasks in strict compliance with occupational health and safety standards.
• Identify and address all potential safety risks promptly.
• Maintain consistency in all log scaling procedures to ensure reliability.
• Ensure all scaling activities meet regulatory requirements of the provinces.

Qualifications

• Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent.
• Required ability to acquire Manitoba and Saskatchewan Scaling Licenses.
• Technical knowledge in forestry and logging practices is considered an advantage.
• Must be a motivated self-starter with strong organizational skills and able to solve problems effectively.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills are necessary for working independently or as part of a team.
• Must adapt to shifting priorities and work with minimal supervision.
• Attention to detail is critical for this role.
• Ability to collaborate well with contractors, government officials, and other external stakeholders.
• Proficiency in computer usage, including Microsoft Office and Excel, is required.
• Possession of a valid Class 5 Driver’s License is mandatory.
