Position Overview

The Furniture Stripping and Preparation Technician (Tech I) is responsible for getting furniture ready for refinishing or upholstery work by removing existing finishes, fixing minor damages, and preparing surfaces appropriately. This role requires the use of various chemical strippers, hand tools, and power tools while strictly following safety measures and maintaining an orderly workspace.

Key Responsibilities

  • Efficiently and safely remove paints, varnishes, stains, and other surface finishes using chemical agents, scrapers, sandpaper, and power sanders.
  • Prepare furniture surfaces by cleaning, sanding, and filling imperfections to ensure a smooth and even base for refinishing or upholstery.
  • Fix minor structural issues such as loose joints, chips, and dents using wood fillers and adhesives.
  • Choose suitable stripping products and repair materials according to the furniture’s wood type and finish requirements.
  • Strictly observe safety practices including handling chemicals responsibly, wearing proper protective gear, and maintaining a hazard-free environment.
  • Inspect finished preparations for quality assurance, confirming readiness for subsequent restoration stages.
  • Manage inventory of stripping materials, tools, and equipment; communicate restocking needs to supervisors.
  • Maintain a clean, organized workspace to prevent accidents and support workflow efficiency.
  • Optionally, keep detailed records of tasks performed, materials utilized, and time spent on projects.
  • Optionally collaborate with team members such as refinishers, upholsterers, and customer service for cohesive project execution.

Qualifications and Skills

  • Proven background in furniture preparation and stripping or a closely related area.
  • Understanding of various wood species, finishing types, and stripping techniques.
  • Demonstrated skill in handling hand tools, power equipment, and chemicals safely and effectively.
  • Ability to evaluate furniture condition and determine appropriate remediation methods.
  • Meticulous attention to detail with a strong commitment to quality workmanship.
  • Good problem-solving abilities and capability to work independently.
  • Physical ability to lift and move furniture as required.
  • Familiarity with workplace safety protocols, especially regarding chemical and tool handling.
