Team and Role
The Fulfilment Engineering team develops systems that efficiently connect demand and supply across Grab’s services, addressing complex marketplace challenges including driver experiences, allocation efficiency, and system reliability. This team collaborates with Product, Data Science, Analytics, Operations, and other engineering units to scale systems that support millions of transactions throughout Southeast Asia.
As a Software Engineering Manager II, you will oversee a team responsible for developing and maintaining vital fulfilment systems. Your leadership will foster an environment promoting reliable delivery, technical growth, and effective engineering roadmaps aligned with product and business priorities. Maintaining technical expertise while empowering senior engineers to handle architecture and technical decisions will be a key aspect of the role. You will report directly to the Senior Software Engineering Manager and work onsite in a five-day office schedule.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor engineers by setting clear goals and supporting individual development plans.
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define priorities, roadmaps, and measurable success metrics.
- Manage the team's engineering roadmap, proactively addressing risks and interdependencies.
- Guide senior engineers in establishing solid technical strategies, including architecture and trade-offs.
- Enhance system reliability, scalability, security, observability, and cost-effectiveness.
- Implement best engineering practices such as design reviews, testing protocols, deployment processes, incident response, and continuous improvements.
- Create a supportive and inclusive team culture with clarity, psychological safety, and meaningful ownership for members.
- Participate actively in recruitment, talent assessment, and retention efforts both within the team and company-wide.
- Effectively communicate progress, risks, and decisions with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Required Qualifications
- Minimum of eight years of software engineering experience, including designing and operating scalable production systems.
- At least two years managing and developing software engineering teams.
- Hands-on experience with large language models (LLM) and generative AI implementations, including model assessment, prompt engineering, retrieval-augmented generation, and production monitoring.
- Awareness of AI-related risks such as hallucinations, data privacy, security, reliability challenges, latency, and cost management.
- Strong background in backend development, distributed systems, APIs, databases, and cloud infrastructure.
- Proven success in delivering complex projects requiring coordination across multiple teams.
- Experience coaching engineers, managing their performance, and supporting career growth.
- Sound decision-making balancing product delivery, engineering quality, system reliability, and maintainability.
- Excellent communication skills capable of clearly explaining technical and AI-related trade-offs.
