About Rocket Lab
Rocket Lab is a comprehensive space enterprise that delivers versatile launch services, spacecraft design and manufacturing, satellite components, and related technologies. Our mission is to broaden space access by facilitating significant scientific, Earth observation, climate mitigation, national security, and technological innovation missions globally. We operate the Electron rocket, the second most frequently launched U.S. rocket, with more than 230 satellite deployments, and we are actively developing Neutron, a reusable medium-lift launch vehicle for larger satellite constellations. Our Space Systems division builds satellites and payloads that support missions such as NASA's Moon and Mars projects and the James Webb Space Telescope components.
Role Overview
The RF Systems Engineer I – Operations is key to ensuring the operational preparedness of launch vehicle telemetry, tracking, and command (TT&C) systems, along with ground station support. Collaborating with RF, GNC, Flight Software, and Operations teams, you will define mission TT&C strategies, manage space-to-ground system interfaces, and verify communications systems are ready for mission execution. This hands-on role directly contributes to launch readiness and post-launch analyses.
Primary Responsibilities
- Analyze mission requirements, trajectories, and link budgets to determine optimal TT&C operational setups
- Assist in developing TT&C strategies for non-standard missions
- Work cross-functionally with GNC, Flight Software, and Operations to ensure smooth integration
- Maintain space-to-ground Interface Control Documents (ICDs) and manage configuration files for RF hardware and software like modems and transceivers
- Ensure operational configurations are aligned with mission objectives
- Create and maintain data processing scripts using Python or MATLAB to interpret telemetry data
- Analyze hardware-in-the-loop and operational data to identify anomalies, raising and tracking issues through resolution
- Review integrated system testing outcomes to validate radio system and ground infrastructure functionality
- Support ground station checkouts and prepare for missions, including allocation of ground stations based on coverage and availability
- Prepare mission ICDs, coordinate necessary work orders, and participate in vehicle, range, and launch readiness reviews
- Conduct post-flight data analyses and report findings
- Continuously enhance processes and standard operating procedures
Success Criteria
- Take ownership and drive results in assigned systems
- Escalate risks effectively and apply sound engineering judgment
- Communicate proactively and clearly across various teams
- Generate high-quality technical documents and presentations
- Foster a collaborative environment focused on mission success
Required Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s degree or diploma in Engineering, specializing in Electronics, Communications, or RF, or an equivalent qualification
- Strong foundational knowledge of RF engineering and capability to perform basic RF analyses
- Proficiency in Python or MATLAB for processing and analyzing telemetry data
- Experience with RF system integration and testing, including operation of test equipment like vector network analyzers (VNAs) and spectrum analyzers
- Familiarity with systems engineering methodologies and creating documentation such as requirements, design specs, and test plans
- Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet strict mission timelines
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Preferred Attributes and Knowledge
- Hands-on experience with radio communications systems
- Understanding of modulation and coding techniques for communication systems
- Knowledge of system-level RF analyses for spacecraft and ground stations, including link budget assessments
Core Values
- A proactive and helpful attitude
- Responsibility and accountability
- Risk-conscious decision-making
- Clear, action-oriented communication
- Commitment to professionalism and safety
- Adaptability to support various team requirements
Work Environment and Culture
